After an important and hard-fought win against an opponent which Werder are currently in direct competition with, the relief of everyone involved with Werder was clear to see today. Whether it was Claudio Pizarro’s celebration after the goal which made it 2-1, Zlatko Junuzovic’s passionate leap into the air and fish punch after the final whistle or Alexander Nouri’s emotional outburst of emotion after Bartels’ strike, today's win was a weight off the Green-Whites' shoulders, despite there still being a lot of work to do.

The players and management were all in agreement after the game, they all acknowledged just how important this victory was. However, getting the three points didn’t automatically mean everyone was happy. “We have too few points to be able to enjoy the victory,” explained match winner Bartels, and Frank Baumann also “didn’t want to overvalue” the win. Bartels stated, “we were of course good at times, but also had too many bad spells. Chances like the one at the end can’t happen, we almost gave it away. We have to be more careful with the lead at the end of the game.”

On the 90 minutes:

Alexander Nouri: “I’m happy for the team, the fans and everyone who was involved. We’ve already given away a 1-0 half-time lead four times this season, today we fought for the three points with passion, a lot of heart and the support from the fans. In the first half I would have wished for another goal but the reaction to the free-kick goal, which you can’t defend, pleased me. Ever player was convinced we’d win today.

Zlatko Junuzovic: “In the first half, our performance was good, in the second it was so-so. Overall, we had the game under control for around 65 minutes but at the end it was unfortunately close again. We have to stop the opponents getting chances then, but the three points are by far and away the most important thing today.

Max Kruse: “That was a first step in the right direction today. The fight, desire and concentration were right and we played well at times. Of course at the end of the game you could sense the team were nervous, but it was very important to get the three points today, that’s what counted. After a streak of five winless games it’s obviously a relief, especially as it was against an opponent we're in direct competition with. After conceding unluckily we needed something but you saw there was life in the troops.”

Fin Bartels: “It was obvious it was never going to be a top-quality football match and FCI did everything to take points home with them. However, you also saw that we wanted to win at all costs, we also gave everything. We had luck on our side, the win was hard-fought.

Frank Baumann: “We said that the only thing that mattered today were the three points and we got them. The team did well over long periods. We had good spells with the ball, but also less good periods, therefore we can’t overvalue the win. Tough games await us until the end of the year and we can’t just hope we’ll win points sometime in the spring. We can’t let up and have to continue earning points.”

On the coming challenges:

Max Kruse: “Tonight we can be happy about the win, but then we have to continue working hard and scoring points.”

Alexander Nouri: “We still have a long way ahead of us, but this win primarily helps us be able to continue doggedly on our way. We accepted the fight today and also played good football at times. In Berlin we’ll also have to play at our limits and be courageous.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The win gives us some confidence for the coming challenges, but we have to remain focused and continue to work hard - we’re still fighting at the bottom of the table. We’re obviously feeling relief today, but we have to continue scoring points.”

Robert Bauer: “The victory is good for us all, it was unbelievable important. However, at the end of the day it’s only three points and we have to get many more to stay up. I hope things now start to go uphill for us.”

Fin Bartels: “With the table in mind, the victory is enormously important. We have a little room to breathe but not much. With this win behind us, we’ll find one or two situations somewhat easier. What happened today in Berlin is incredible, we have to be thankful for that. However, we have to take confidence from today’s win and play with self belief.

On Max Kruse’s first goal for Werder

Max Kruse: “I’m really pleased with the goal because we won and I was able to play my part in that. I’ve known Fin for a while now and know that he likes to play the ball in very directly, so I made the run and gambled on the cross. It came to me perfectly and I only had to stick my foot out at it.”

Fin Bartels: “I know Max likes to play from our time at St. Pauli and know that he is usually very quick in these situations, so I quickly looked up and simply put it in for him, which worked well.”

On Izet Hajrovic’s injury

Alexander Nouri: “Izet’s injury is a huge dampener on this victory. We’ve paid a price to earn this victory. Izet is a team player and somebody with a lot of heart, who enjoys a strong reputation in the dressing room. As a result we are all saddened by this. An exact diagnosis is yet to be provided but it looks like a bad knee injury.”

Max Kruse: “I haven’t spoken to him but it didn’t look good at all. I hope it doesn’t turn out to be too bad.”

Fin Bartels: “Izet fought back after a difficult phase in his career and has had many good moments during this season. He is an excellent footballer and I hope that he isn’t out for too long.”

Frank Baumann: “It looks like an injury to his knee but we need to wait for a diagnosis to find out the exact details. It makes no sense to send him to hospital this evening. He’ll have scans at the beginning of next week.”

On Drobny’s save just before the final whistle

Robert Bauer: "It was an unbelievable save, he knows that himself. He rescued us with that so we all went to him after the match and thanked him."
