Werder are now unbeaten in five matches after the 3-0 win over RB Leipzig and have taken 13 from a possible 15 points. Today’s win over the second placed side in the Bundesliga was the most convincing of the last five matches. “We played well and were solid at the back,” said head coach Nouri after the win. Sporting director hailed the recent success of the team after a third clean sheet in the last five games, “We’re definitely defending better than we were a few weeks ago and our confidence is growing in our attacking play.” This was despite the loss of two key creative players in the last couple of days to injury.

WERDER.DE interviewed some of those involved in today's match and their thoughts are summarised below:

On the game:

Fin Bartels: “It was a compact team performance today. In the first-half it was an even game and we had a bit of luck when they hit the post, but when we went 2-0 up we had the feeling that we’d taken the sting out of the game. We also know that we’re not out of trouble yet and need to keep working hard.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It’s a special day. We played really well and were very compact. I’m pleased with the win and proud of the team. But we must continue to give everything and stick together. We’re doing well and taking it one step at a time.”

Robert Bauer: “The first-half was even, it was as we had expected. Both teams put a lot into the game on the day. We went in ahead at half-time which helped us and were able to stretch our lead early in the second-half. It was the game that we’d hoped for.”

Alexander Nouri: “I saw a lot of heart and passion again today. Our team spirit was outstanding again today, we were solid and made the transition from defence to attack well. Every individual embodies that spirit. I’m really pleased with the togetherness in our performance today. But this is not a time to start celebrating. We’ll continue to be modest and we know that there is still a long way to go. The way we won the match today however does give us confidence and optimism.”

Frank Baumann: “Leipzig, of course, have a lot of quality and you could particularly see that at the beginning. We were a little bit lucky on a couple of occasions in the first half. It was good for us to get the opening goal and after that we were much better.

On the last-minute withdrawal of Gnabry and Kruse:

Robert Bauer: “Even though we were without Serge and Max today, you could see how much class there is in our squad. When players of that quality are missing, we need to make up for that with an equally strong performance collectively and we did that really well today.”

Florian Grillitsch: “To lose two such important players at short notice is obviously difficult when you first find out. You can’t just replace two players of that stature but we more than compensated for them today.”

Florian Kainz: “It hurt not to have those guys but we made up for it well today but we were able to make up for that. Everyone who played gave it everything they had."

On the upcoming international break:

Florian Grillitsch: “The last few matches have given us a lot of confidence and I don’t think that we will lose all of that after the international break. We just have to try to build on what we showed today.”

Frank Baumann: “It is definitely a shame that it’s now the international break since we are on a good run and we obviously would have liked to have been able to continue with that next week. Now we simply have to use this time to recover as best we can.

Zlatko: Junuzovic: “The break will do us a bit of good. It gives us a chance to wind down and recover. Then we can go into the next few games at full strength."
