The marked man in the mask

Beware the wounded soldier: Thomas Delaney will still be one to watch for Werder, despite wearing a protective facemask.

+++ His appearance alone is enough to terrify opponents. Thomas Delaney, who has been known for his imposing presence and no-nonsense tackles since his arrival in the Bundesliga, now has an additional characteristic with which to inspire fear into his opponents: a mask! The Dane looked like evoked comparisons to Zorro and Batman whilst he trained for the first time with his new mask on Sunday. Whether Leverkusen will have to account for the masked man in green and white has not yet been determined. Delaney will first test out his new acquisition on the training ground with his own teammates…+++

+++ A penalty streak: Nine taken, nine scored. Max Kruse is simply ice-cold from the penalty spot. Following his penalty in Augsburg, the 28-year-old successfully converted his second in Werder colours. Kruse began the streak during his tenure with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he scored seven penalties. +++

+++ Wiedwald trumps Kruse: One man, two goals, three points. For many Werder fans, Max Kruse was the clear game-winner of the 2-0 victory over Darmstadt, thanks to his brace on Saturday. However, Felix Wiedwald had an excellent game. The goalkeeper, vital to the side, has now kept two clean-sheets in three games, and for that was praised many a time. As a result, Wiedwald found himself in kicker’s “Team of the Week”, as well as in the BILD magazine alongside Max Kruse. In addition, on Werder’s Facebook Page Kruse was voted as the “Volkswagen Man of the Match”. +++

+++ A trio of captains: Three players led the team on the weekend in a Werder shirt: Captain Clemens Fritz returned to the starting eleven following his suspension, but had to be replaced due to injury on the 39 minute mark. Vice-captain Zlatko Junuzovic left the field shortly beforehand, leaving Claudio Pizarro to take the captain’s armband. Finally, Niklas Moisander took on the role of captain when Pizarro was brought off with 20 minutes to go.+++

+++ Clean sheets: It wasn’t just the first-team that didn’t concede on the weekend. The U23s also managed to keep a clean sheet and it was their third in a row. Michael Zetterer was in goal for the first time this calendar year in the 0-0 against table toppers Duisberg. In the previous two games, the 21-year-old reserve keeper had to step up for the U23 Green and Whites, but did so with aplomb. +++

+++ Loanees don’t meet: The potential meeting between three Werder loanees in the second division match between Munich 1860 and St. Pauli never materialised. While Lennart Thy came on for St. Pauli in the closing stages of their 2-1 away win, Marnon Busch and Levent Aycicek remained on the bench for 1860. With that win, Thy’s team moved to within one point of the Lions as the fight to stay up at the bottom of Bundesliga 2 intensifies. +++

+++ Maiden goal: Ex-Werder player Julian von Haacke scored his first goal for his new club NEC Nijmegen at the weekend. The midfielder levelled the score before they eventually went on to win the match 3-1. We wish the Bremen-born player every success in the Eredivisie. +++
