+++ Finally some game time again: There were fears he would not be able to come back but Luca Caldirola has returned to the field and is wearing the Werder shirt once again. The Italian centre-back has had to wait four months and three days for this moment. Caldirola was brought on 20 minutes before the end against second-tier side Eintracht Braunschweig together with five of his fellow teammates. It was a “brilliant feeling”, Werder’s number three posted later that evening on Instagram about his return. Caldirola had returned to first-team training at the team’s training camp in Alhaurin el Grande after breaking his lateral malleolus and an injury to his ligaments. +++

+++ Back problems: As Caldirola was leaving the field in Braunschweig another Werder man had to vacate his already snowy seat shortly after halftime - Claudio Pizarro. The Peruvian was unable to continue due to a back injury. After taking Sunday and Monday to rehabilitate, the 38-year old is looking to re-join his teammates on Tuesday to continue preparing for this weekend’s game against Dortmund. +++

+++ Last breather before Dortmund: Pizarro’s fellow teammates also had the chances to enjoy some rest at the beginning of the week. The Green-Whites will then have double training sessions on both Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, with the afternoon sessions (15:00 CET both days) open to the public. +++

+++ Shortened winter break: When the ball finally gets rolling on Saturday afternoon, there will have been 31 days between the last Bundesliga game of 2016, and the opener in 2017. Taking a look back on the past ten years, only the 2010/11 season had a shorter winter break (28 days). Next time round, it’ll be even shorter, as the DFL have the return of the Bundesliga in 2018 scheduled for the 12th of January. This would allow time for a break of around just 25 days. Since the 2014/15 season, the winter break has shortened by 18 days: 43 days off (2014/15), 36 days (2015/16), 31 days, (2016/17). +++
