“Pick up points against Bayern”: Felix Wiedwald hasn’t appeared in the starting eleven for Werder since Matchday 11 of the season. Against record champions Bayern, he looks set to return in place of the suspended Jaroslav Drobny. But Wiedwald is only seeing the visit of the league leaders to the Osterdeich as a positive. “I imagine this weekend will be very hard work, but it also gives me a chance to show and prove what I can do,” stressed Werder’s keeper ahead of the duel with Bayern. Munich started the year slowly, needing a last minute goal to take all three points from Freiburg. “Freiburg showed how Bayern can be rattled, and we play like that, as we did against Dortmund then anything is possible.” He added: “There is always a higher incentive against the defending champions.”

+++ Noteworthy date: On matchday 18, the Bundesliga will commemorate the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz 72 years ago as part of the “Never again” campaign. As part of this initiative, clubs from all the professional leagues in Germany are remembering the victims of the terror of National Socialism with a particular focus on those affected who were involved in German football. As well as several other things, there will be an announcement at the stadium ahead of kick-off for SV Werder’s match with FC Bayern, looking back on what happened at the time. +++

+++ Papa Santiago: The Werder family continues to grow and grow. After Aron Jóhannsson started the new year by announcing that he will soon become a father, Santiago García can look forward to the same thing with his wife Carla. She revealed that she was 16 weeks pregnant on Tuesday via Instagram. The Garcías are therefore expecting the first child of this generation in their family. All the best to you both! +++

+++ Yatabaré out of Africa Cup: Sambou Yatabaré’s 2017 Africa Cup is already over. Mali could not overcome underdogs Uganda in their final group game as it ended in a 1-1 draw. With just two points from three games, Mali were not able to progress to the knockout stages. Yatabaré, who started the first two games against Ghana and Egypt was an unused substitute in his country’s final group game. +++
