++ Werder fans already knew Robert Bauer was a fighter before his injury at the weekend. The wing-back had to be substituted after a tussle with Aleksandar Ignjovski on Saturday, in which he sustained an injury. Bauer was desperate to carry on despite the knock, however. “I’d signalled that I needed to come off so Santi got himself ready to come on, but then I realised that I could perhaps carry on so I said that Santi should hang on a bit. Then, during a sprint, I realised that there was no point in carrying,” explained Bauer. Bauer still wanted to celebrate the 5-2 win with the fans as he hobbled over to them on crutches. “I was really pleased for the team and how they played,” said the 21-year-old. “I’ve often said that I’m happy to be a part of this team and after such a great victory, I had to go and celebrate with the fans.” +++

++ A good deed: Serge Gnabry is currently injured and unable to help the team on the field, however, he’s showing kindness off it. A few weeks ago, the attacker visited cancer sufferer Lukas in the Prof. Hess clinic in Bremen city centre. The Germany international then posted a photo on Instagram of the meeting on Sunday: “The fight that Lukas shows in his battle against illness has inspired me,“ said Gnabry. “We’ll see each other again.” Great work, Serge! +++

++ Delay becomes Delaney: Thomas Delaney’s performance in the away match at Freiburg caught a lot of people’s attention. The midfielder was named in the Bundesliga team of the week and can be voted for as the player of the week on Bundesliga.de. Perhaps the biggest compliment of all came from almost a man with a similar name to Delaney, Jan Delay. The musician announced on twitter on Saturday evening that Hamburg council had accepted his application to change his name: the Werder fan jokingly wrote, “I’m now called Jan Delaney.” +++

++ Steadily improving run of form: Max Kruse now has seven goals to his name this season. The attacker has only played 15 matches this term due to injury. In comparison, Kruse featured 32 times for Wolfsburg and scored seven goals. The ex-Freiburg man notched a goal and an assist for the Green-Whites on his return to Breisgau on Saturday. +++

++ Finnish leader: The captaincy issue was a major talking point last summer and something that managing director, Frank Baumann noticed. Niklas Moisander has filled this role in the past and on Saturday, for the first time since his switch from Sampdoria, captained Werder from the start for the first time. “It shows the admiration that Niklas’ teammates and coaches have for him,” said Baumann joyfully. The experienced Finn had to step up after Werder lost Fritz and Junuzovic to injury. He appeared to do exactly this with a pass completion rate of 88% and tackle win rate of 67%. +++

++ Penalty slayer: Werder goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald had only conceded three goals in his previous six matches before Freiburg so he was naturally disappointed to concede two in Breisgau, however, he did save Nils Petersen’s penalty, however, making it the second successive penalty conceded by Werder that Wiedwald has saved, after being beaten by the previous eight he faced. +++

++ Reward for a long journey: The 3,500 Werder fans who made the long trip to Freiburg will have fond memories of their trip. “When was the last time we scored five goals away from home?” That would definitely have been a question on the lips of most Werder fans after the match. It was just over seven years ago in February 2010 when Werder won 5-1 at Hannover 96. The only current Werder player who was present for that game is Claudio Pizarro.  The Peruvian scored Werder’s fifth that day. +++
