+++ Time off abroad: The Werder players have had ten days of holiday over the winter break and festive period to digest the first half of the season. The Green-Whites have been on social media showing off their holiday destinations over the last two weeks. Serge Gnabry and Max Kruse spent their time off in the USA, while Theodor Gebre Selassie, Santiago Garcia and Lamine Sané enjoyed time with their respective families back home. The players are expected to report back to training at 17:00 CET today refreshed and recharged ahead of the second half of the season, which begins in just three weeks. +++

+++ Tackling star: In the first half of the season, Lamine Sané quickly developed into a pillar of Werder’s back-four. Having won 66 percent of his duels, Sané is not only the Green-Whites’ best tackler, but is also in the top 3 best tacklers in the Bundesliga. The Senegalese is ahead of household names including Niklas Süle, Sokratis and Jannik Vestergaard. Bayern’s Mats Hummels leads the tackling chart, having 70.1 percent of his duels. +++

+++ Aronsson oder Aronsdóttir: There was joyous news from the Jóhannsson house in the New Year. Werder's number nine took to Instagram to post a picture of himself alongside his girlfriend Bryndís with the caption "2017 will be the best one so far," accompanied by a family emoji, announcing that he will become a father for the first time in the year ahead! As was visible during EURO 2016, the common Icelandic naming system sees the child take on the first name of the father as a surname, adapted depending on their sex. A male child would be Aronsson and a female would be Aronsdóttir, but no news was given on that front.+++

+++ Further congratulations: There was another piece of good news that arrived just before the end of the year, this time for Sambou Yatabaré. On 23rd December, the Werder midfielder was awarded the title of Mali Footballer of the Year 2016. "I am very proud of this title. This year was not always easy for me, but I am very happy to end it with this award" said the 27-year-old against footmali.com. +++
