++ Aron playing catch-up: He was out of team training for almost a year, but he has been back for two and a half weeks now and is fighting for a place in the team. Werder‘s sporting director, Frank Baumann, is optimistic that Aron Jóhannsson will soon be looking for goals in the Bundesliga, and not just on the training pitch. "It is looking good. There are no more problems to report", said Baumann after the cup match, before adding that "Aron obviously has a bit of catching up to do after being out for so long.” +++

++ The outlook for Pizarro and García: Claudio Pizarro and Santiago García didn’t play a part in Lotte, and the two South Americans are training individually at the moment due to muscle injuries. After the match in Lotte, Frank Baumann revealed how Pizarro and García are getting on: “An appearance from Claudio is possible but it is unlikely. We don’t want to take any risks because the last thing we want is for him to still be out after the international break”, says Baumann. With García, it looks like “he won’t be ready to play against Munich”. +++

++ Focus on Bayern: One day on, the pain of the cup exit is still fresh, but there is no time to dwell on it. The Bundesliga opening match against reigning champions Bayern is coming up on Friday. Subsequently, this will be a short week of training for the Werder first team, beginning on Monday morning. Yesterday’s starting eleven went out on their bikes, whilst the other players have completed a training session as normal. The team will train at 10:00 CEST on Tuesday (open) and Wednesday (closed to the public). Head coach Viktor Skripnik will then rally his troops for one last time at 14:00 CEST on Thursday for an open training session in Bremen, before they fly to Munich in the late afternoon. +++

++ Four debutants: No less than four players made their competitive debut for Werder in the DFB Cup on Sunday afternoon. Niklas Moisander and Lamine Sané made the starting eleven, whilst Florian Kainz and Johannes Eggestein were brought on later in the game. Max Kruse and Lennart Thy also made their first appearance since returning to the Green-Whites, however all six players would have wanted a lot more from their first afternoon of Werder football. +++

++ Silver for Oelschlägel: In one of the best football matches of the year, the Germany Olympic squad put up a great fight against hosts Brazil, but had to admit defeat after a close penalty shootout. Former Green-White Nils Petersen, who finished alongside Serge Gnabry as the tournament’s top goalscorer (6 goals), missed Germany’s last penalty. Despite the result, Werder keeper Eric Oelschlägel was able to celebrate picking up a silver medal. The 20-year old went from standby player to substitute, due to Leon Goretzka’s injury, and watched the game from the bench. Congratulations, Oeler and the rest of the team on a fantastic tournament! +++
