If he had seen this headline before the game, he probably wouldn’t have believed it… Florian Kainz stunned himself when he put the Green-Whites ahead with his low strike, which turned out to be the deciding goal that won them the Nordderby on Easter Sunday. Having come on after an hour of the match had passed, the crowd erupted in jubilation as the Austrian bagged the second Bundesliga goal of his career in the 106th edition of the Nordderby. “Had someone come to me saying things would play out the way they did, I would have signed up blind,” laughed Kainz after the game.

The wide player could hardly comprehend the gravitas of what he had just accomplished himself, even after the whistle for full-time whistle was blown. The left-footed midfielder has now come off the bench eight times in a row, and simply tries to make a difference in every game: “The manager tells me that I’ll be deployed if we’re in need of an offensive spark. It’s going great as an impact sub,” said Kainz.

Things are constantly improving for the speedy winger. “He’s never slipped up, and gives his all for the team. I’m pleased that he’s been rewarded for his hard work today,” explained Frank Baumann, whose praise for the perseverance of the midfielder is valid by all accounts, as was manager Alexander Nouri’s. “Flo was ready to go the patient route. He’s built a case for himself in games and training sessions over the last few weeks. He repaid our faith in him with the goal, and brought us the win,” stated Nouri.

But it’s not just the coaching figures of the newly-signed summer transfer singing his praises for his perseverance in recent months. Kainz had only been on the pitch a total of four minutes prior to the turn of the year. “He continued to work hard even when times were tough for him,” said countryman Zlatko Junuzovic. “When he comes on, he always provides a spark,” exclaimed Fin Bartels.

The initial difficulties that Kainz endured seem to finally be coming to an end. “It wasn’t going great for me during the Autumn months, but I’ve moved on from that now. I only look ahead to the future,” stated Kainz bluntly. There’s only one question of the Austrian in light of his recent form: When will he start? “He’s always a candidate for a starting place in the team, but he has to be patient,” explained Alexander Nouri on the 24-year-old’s hopes. It was an afternoon derby that couldn’t have gone any better for Kainz.
