Pen has been put to paper and the contracts have all been signed. Jiri Pavlenka is officially a Werder player! WERDER.DE spoke to “Pavlas” about his choice to move to Bremen, his fellow Czech teammates and the city itself.

WERDER.DE: The transfer itself took some time to go through but you decided on Werder some time ago. How glad are you now to be here?

Jiri Pavlenka: “I’m really pleased to be here. Werder is one of the most traditional clubs in Germany. I think that there is a lot of potential in this club and obviously I am delighted to have two others from the Czech Republic in the squad as well that will be able to help me settle in at the beginning.”

WERDER.DE : What made you choose Werder?

Jiri Pavlenka: “It was always my dream to play in the Bundesliga, one of the strongest leagues in the world. It was amazing when I heard that Werder were interested in my. Of course I informed Theo and Drobo about my decision to join the club and both have only had positive things to say about the city, the club and the fans.”

WERDER.DE: You know Jaroslav Drobny from the national team and he is now a direct competitor of yours. What is your objective for pre-season?

Jiri Pavlenka: “It is definitely not going to be easy because Werder is a huge club and there are a lot of good goalkeepers here. But I believe in myself and my ability to make the breakthrough here. Werder have a very good and experienced goalkeeper in Jaroslav Drobny. For me that is fantastic since I can still learn a huge amount from him bit I will also try to help him. Ultimately we want to help and push each other so that the team can benefit from that.

WERDER.DE: It is very important as a goalkeeper to be in command of the players in front of you. In what language will you give instructions to your teammates?

Jiri Pavlenka: “I can say a few words already in English but obviously it’s important to be able to speak in German, which is why I will try to learn the language as quickly as possible. It would be ideal to do that immediately but I first want to brush up on my English.”

WERDER.DE: Have you had any chance to look around the city?

Jiri Pavlenka: “I still haven’t been able to see much. I know that Bremen is not as big as Prague but I originally come from a small city, so I think I will definitely be happy here. After the training camp is over, I will definitely take some time to look around and check out the sites.”

WERDER.DE: And who would you prefer to be your tour guide, Gebre Selassie or Drobny?

Jiri Pavlenka: “Both I think! ‘Theo’ would show me absolutely everything in one day and with ‘Drobo’ I would probably see more of the stuff to do at night (laughs).”
