Maximilian Eggestein will not be able to hang up his shirt in his lounge on the occasion of his first ever Bundesliga goal after swapping it at the end of the game. Not however, with an opposition player, but a fan in the Ostkurve. The decision was a spontaneous one, posing next to the fan with a shirt of his brother Johannes. “We’ll see what he thinks of it,” joked Maxi Eggestein, who scored his first ever Bundesliga goal in the 80th minute. He did not look entirely sure that it would be a good idea for him to give away the biggest trophy of the evening.

Eggestein’s goal was the icing on the cake in the 3-0 win over Schalke on a memorable evening at the Weser-Stadion. However the 20-year-old celebrated his strike in typically humble fashion. “The thing that pleased me most was that the goal made the victory certain. The fact that it was me who scored it was a bonus,” said Eggestein. He did at least acknowledge that he was especially pleased with his header. “Since I’ve been at Werder, I have always imagined how it would feel to score facing the Ostkurve,” revealed the elder of the two Eggestein brothers. But now he knows. “It was a great feeling. I don’t think I really savoured the moment enough,” said Eggestein, almost sounding slightly disappointed that the referee had asked him not to celebrate for too long.

It took him 18 games to score his first goal in the Bundesliga. It was only afterwards that the midfielder emphasised with a grin, “Pekarik’s goal from last weekend made me think about how long I would probably need before I got my first goal,” said Eggestein. Hertha defender Peter Pekarik netted for the first time in the Bundesliga last Friday in his 151st appearance.

Eggestein’s teammates only had words of praise for their teammate, who was brought on at half-time. “When Maxi comes on, he always performs. He just plays his game. Today, he also played well and his goal topped off his performances in recent weeks. I’m delighted for him,” said Zlatko Junuzovic. “Maxi has so much potential and definitely has a bright future ahead of him. I’m really happy that he got his reward and scored his first goal in a game like this. There is nothing better than that,” added Max Kruse, who set up his fellow teammate with his perfectly-timed cross.
