It was a result that didn’t really help either side, as SVW and HSV shared the spoils. This was the conclusion drawn by the Green-Whites after the 2-2 draw in the Nordderby. “We are disappointed. Obviously we have kept HSV at bay with this result, but it is so frustrating that we haven’t won here. We set our goal much higher than a point,” said Captain Clemens Fritz after the final whistle. Despite coming back from behind twice, the skipper’s team mates also appeared disappointed with just a point from the game.

WERDER.DE summarise below the reaction to the Nordderby.

On the 90 minutes:

Clemens Fritz: “There was a lot of nervousness in the first half. It was a frenetic game with both teams making mistakes. You could see that neither team was brimming with confidence. In the second-half, we were a lot better, but didn’t make use of the two or three chances we had. We also lacked that bit of quality with the final ball.”

Serge Gnabry: “We didn’t start the game very well, but were able to stay in the game for the duration. I think it’s a fair result and we have to live with it. We showed a lot of character in an intense game. To be behind twice in the derby and still pick up a point, will strengthen our morale.”

Alexander Nouri: “It was an intense 90 minutes in which both sides gifted each other a lot. You could sense the tension in both teams, with mistakes aplenty in the game. All things considered, we have to be happy with the point, even though we had good chances to score the decisive goal through Fin Bartels and Robert Bauer.”

Philipp Bargfrede: “There are a few things which we definitely need to cut out. It was positive to see that we could show a good reaction to going behind twice, but we set our goal much higher than a draw. The result doesn’t really help either team going forward.”

Fin Bartels: “In the first half, we had two or three good chances to score, but once again looked susceptible at the back. After the break, we were then a lot more organised at the back, but lacked that bite going forward. We definitely still could have taken all three points.”

Frank Baumann: “It was a classic derby. It wasn’t necessarily the best quality but very tough. We had some clear-cut chances in the first half and we scored our goals at very important stages of the game. We then tailed off a touch in the second half. We will find it difficult to be overly happy going back home with a point. It could have been worse, but the three points were there for the taking."

On both HSV goals

Clemens Fritz: “We were behind after just three minutes which shouldn’t be happening. We need to cut out these individual mistakes. Both goals were handed to Hamburg on a plate. We are always talking about shoring up in defence, but we now need to go and show it in our next game.”

Frank Baumann: “We knew that Hamburg would look to get on the front foot early on. The first goal was down to a misunderstanding between Moisander and Drobny, but was also a consequence of us not doing enough to defend the throw-in. For the second goal, we were too slow at reacting to losing the ball at the back.”

Serge Gnabry: “We were switched off for the first goal. It was then my misplaced pass that led to the second. These two lapses of concentration shouldn’t be happening.”

Alexander Nouri: “Obviously we want to avoid unnecessary pieces of play that led to the first goal. We need to do more to cut out these errors. We are working very hard on our defensive organisation, making certain movements become second nature and analysing the opposition. However, during the game it is also about each player being switched on. We will need to keep working on this. We just made too many mistakes and gave the ball away too often.”

On the inclusion of Bauer and Petsos

Alexander Nouri: “Robert had done really well in the last few training sessions and was ready. He performed well in training and made a case for himself to play today. Thanos should get a chance, like he did already against Schalke. Unfortunately, we had to react at half time as he had already been booked and we didn’t want to run the risk of going a man down.”

Frank Baumann: “Robert never let his head drop in the last few weeks and always worked hard. In my opinion, his inclusion in the starting XI had a lot to do with HSV’s Filip Kostic, who he handled well. Robert had good moments going forwards and overall he played a very tidy game after not featuring for so long.”

On the change of goalkeepers

Alexander Nouri: “We chose Drobo because of his presence. We have faith in him and he will be our no. 1 going forward too – that’s what we as the coaching staff have decided. In a private chat, Felix accepted the decision very professionally; he’s a team player. Drobo helps the team with his experience, today he also had some good moments, like the save on Kostic.”

Frank Baumann: “We went for Jaro because of his derby experience and that feeling of security which he radiates. He was good today, even if one or two of his passes did go astray.”

On taking Gnabry off

Alexander Nouri: “We wanted to strengthen the left side defensively, so we moved Junzovic there and had an additional focal point in the centre who’s physical and holds the ball well in Pizarro. We expected an intense game with a lot of defensive work and long balls, therefore we wanted to bring on Pizarro later.”

On the upcoming game against Ingolstadt

Fin Bartels: “Against Ingolstadt it’ll now be about upping the ante. You saw that the team moral and structure are completely intact, in the coming weeks we just have to continue to work with concentration. We created a few good chances, if we can take that from the game I’ll be optimistic, we just have to be more ruthless and stick the ball away.
