A derby win! The crowd rejoice at the derby win with banners in hand, with not a care in the world as they have nothing on their mind but the late goal to win the derby over Hamburg, and achieving eight place in the table. “This moment is simply fantastic,” said a visibly ecstatic Fin Bartels. The Werder fans sing of their Europa Cup place ambitions, and of the fourth home win in a row. “We sang along for a bit,” said Zlatko Junuzovic with a smile on his place, before adding: “For the fans. It makes me happy that we’ve been able to give them something back in the last few weeks.”

Nine consecutive games undefeated for the Green-Whites. The streak is alive and has fans and, regardless of what they may say, the players too, dreaming of what could be. “We’ve acquired some vital points in the fight to avoid relegation. That was a massive step forward,” stated Max Kruse, who contributed to the win with a goal and an assist.

WERDER.DE collects the reactions to the Nordderby win.

On the game:

Max Kruse: “We fought hard, played well, and deserved to win. We took no time at all to get going in the game, even though we soon found ourselves 1-0 down. We continued to work hard and create a plethora of chances.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We started off fantastically, but conceded the opening goal soon thereafter, which really was a tough blow to take. Unfortunately the ball just wouldn’t go into the back of the net after that for Grillitsch and for the free-kick. The rhythm of the game was a problem us because Hamburg tested us with a lot of long-balls over the top, but we always know that we would have more chances come our way, and we used them well.”

Florian Kainz: “It was a special game, which makes it twice as good to have one today. It’s a wonderful feeling to have helped my team with the goal and give the fans the gift of a derby win. The victory meant a lot to the fans, us players, and the whole city. That’s why we wanted to win at all costs.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We were the better team from the start. Sure, there were phases during which we failed to create chances, but the win was deserved on the whole. The manager told us during the break that we needed to remain patient.”

Fin Bartels: “Despite the early setback, we kept faith in ourselves and continued with the belief that what we’ve worked on in the last few weeks would pay off. We outplayed Hamburg today and showed the same quality we’ve shown in recent weeks.”

Frank Baumann: “We started off really well, but unfortunately it was Hamburg who took the lead with their first chance. The fact that the opening goal didn’t de-rail us just goes to show how much confidence and belief this team has. There’s no question we deserved to win the game.”

Alexander Nouri: “That was a totally deserved victory. We created a lot of chances in the first-half, but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise on all of them. However, we remained patience and were rewarded for playing a good game with the three points. I’m happy for the team, who continue to play with passion.”

On the Europa Cup – what the fans dream of:

Max Kruse: “We’ve taken a big step in the right direction when it comes to avoiding relegation, but it seems like you need so many points this year, unlike any amount needed before. We’ll to concentrate on the tasks ahead as a team, and the table isn’t a part of that. We can travel to Ingolstadt with confidence. We know what’s ahead of us and want to stay up comfortably. In spite of that, everyone is entitled to dream. It’s worked out well in recent weeks to just focus on the next game head alone. When we’ve tallied up 40 points, then we can talk about our next objective.

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We do indeed want to keep developing, and at some point we’ll look above us and see what we can achieve, but you have to be realistic. The confidence is there. We have to build on our achievements and not become complacent with what we have done so far.”

Fin Bartels: “The table can change drastically, and does so frequently. We’re aiming for 40 points. The fans have every right to sing, and we sang along for a short while today. However, our focus is already on the next game and the 40-point-mark.”

Frank Baumann: “The fans deserve to enjoy the day and dream, but our goal remains the same. As for now, we have neither reached our goal of 40 points, nor our season goal of guaranteed safety.”

Alexander Nouri: “The fans are entitled to dream of course, but whilst anything is possible, we’ll stay modest and focused. We’ll not be led astray by anything.”

On the winning streak:

Max Kruse: “The secret to success is just continuing to work hard, and nothing else. We are united as a team, even through the toughest days of this season. We will stick together until the end.”

Frank Baumann: “The training staff and the team have worked hard throughout this winning streak. It involves a lot of analysis, preparation, and intensive training sessions. Many teams manage to put together runs of good results, but we’ve put together a run that spans months, throughout which we’ve constantly produced great results. We’ll evaluate everything come the end of the season, as nothing has been determined yet.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “You don’t win Bundesliga games on the day alone; there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it in the weeks beforehand. Today was also the product of said hard work.”

On the derby win:

Max Kruse: “It’s a fantastic feeling. I’ve already enjoyed a lot of great moments with this club since my return, and today was yet another excellent day. In the days leading up to it, it was obvious how the whole city was hyped for the derby. The banner we just celebrated made an appearance in our final training session before the big game. It shows how important the derby is to the fans and the city.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The fans have every reason to celebrate. It’s wonderful that we’ve been able to give something back to them in recent weeks.”

Frank Baumann: “A derby is always fascinating, even from the bench. I kept getting goose-bumps.”

Alexander Nouri: “There was a special tension in the air today. Both teams are fighting to stay up, which added fuel to the fire. It was great to see the fans on the way to the stadium. I’m really happy that the team were able to gift the fans a win.”

On Garcia’s injury:

Frank Baumann: “He was unlucky to have landed how he did on the ground, and twisted his neck. He’ll undergo further examination today. We hope that it’s nothing serious.”
