SV Werder Bremen forward Serge Gnabry got off to an impressive start in his national team career for Germany. The 21-year-old supplied three goals during Germany’s 8-0 victory over San Marino and was one of the most active players on the pitch.

Germany manager Joachim Löw deployed Gnabry in attacking midfield of the starting line-up, where he had already made headlines during Germany’s charge for the Olympic silver medal last summer. “He’s been playing for Werder recently and he’s in a good rhythm,” praised Löw after the game, having allowed Gnabry to play the full 90 minutes.

Frank Baumann also enjoyed Gnabry’s display during his DFB Team debut: “That was a fine first game with the national team. San Marino may not be a top team, but scoring three goals against them isn’t as easy as it sounds,” said Werder’s sporting director.

Match Report

The World Champions recorded an expected and clear 8-0 victory in Serravalle. Sami Khedira and Serge Gnabry were on target inside the first ten minutes to pave the way to victory. Jonas Hector added a third goal to Germany’s lead before the break.

In the second half, Gnabry crowned his national team debut with two more goals, becoming the first Germany player since Dieter Müller on June 17th 1976 to score a hat-trick in his first game. Hector was on target again, earning his first brace in a Germany shirt. An own goal by Mattia Stefanelli and a strike by substitute Kevin Volland rounded out the scoring.

Germany are leading Group C with a perfect record of twelve points from four games and no goals conceded.
