Robert Bauer made his disappointment clear after the final whistle. “I know the fans must be sick of us standing here every week, saying the same thing. If we didn’t have to do this then we wouldn’t,” said the defender to journalists in the mixed zone of the Weser-Stadion. However, like his Green-White colleagues, answering to the media is something they have to do. “We had planned a lot and didn’t do any of it in the first half. The second period was somewhat better but just not good enough. We’ve now lost four times in a row and are rightly towards the bottom of the table.”

WERDER.DE has all of the reaction from the disappointing Gladbach clash.

Thoughts on the match:

Frank Baumann: “Our worries have certainly increased. We had planned to do much more, but today it wasn’t enough in all aspects. Our commitment, doggedness, final ball, grit going forwards – it was all missing. After today’s performance, I don’t have the impression every player has understood our current position. We can’t ignore that, we’ll act upon it and observe who is still worthy of wearing the Werder jersey.”

Alexander Nouri: “We’re extremely disappointed; the way we played today was unsatisfactory. If you’re at your own stadium and lose to a counterattack, you haven’t done enough. After, you have to change the situation and force your luck – we didn’t do that. We’ll now look at ourselves critically and shoulder the responsibility together.”

Niklas Moisander: “The result is very disappointing for us. We all knew how important the game was and we really wanted to win. On the pitch we were missing little things. We weren’t able to perform over the whole 90 minutes and that’s not enough to win.”

Felix Wiedwald: “The loss is extremely bitter. Mönchengladbach are certainly not the easiest opponents to play against and our game was okay for parts in the second half, but we could have played for another 90 minutes and the ball probably wouldn’t have gone in.”

Thoughts on the current situation:

Felix Wiedwald: “Everyone knows what it’s about now. We’ve lost four times in a row, only points will help us. We had obviously pictured things going differently. Like last year, we’re right down at the bottom and can’t just presume we’ll somehow survive like that last year – that won’t happen by itself. We have to flip the switch.”

Robert Bauer: “Without question, the last few games have left us on a downwards spiral, our confidence is lacking. You try to blank out the run of defeats, the coach prepares us well, he says clearly what he expects of us. But when the first few actions don’t work out on the pitch, our uncertainty comes back quickly, it’s not easy. And anyway, there are still 14 games and we don’t have 20 points fewer than the other teams, but are in the relegation play-off place – our fate is in our hands.”

Thoughts on the discussions surrounding the coach:

Frank Baumann: “The coach has nothing to do with this, every player has to look at themselves today and no player is exempt from this. Alex will analyse the game calmly and prepare the team for the match in Mainz.”

Alexander Nouri: “I don’t like to be centre of attention, it’s about the work in hand and the club. However, I still believe in the team and I have complete confidence in the path we’re on and our work. I know we’ll get out of this tough situation together. Now my coaching staff and I will turn our attention to the Mainz game and prepare for that.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The coach sets us up well each week, but we have to bring what he wants onto the pitch.”

Felix Wiedwald: “We’re completely behind the coach. He took over from a difficult situation in the first half of the season. Now we have to turn things around together again.”

Thoughts on the atmosphere amongst the fans:

Alexander Nouri: “It’s absolutely understandable. We’re all disappointed and the fans are of course too. I can understand their discontent and we all share it.”
