It was visibly tough for the Werder players and staff to express how they were feeling after the bitter 3-2 defeat to FC Augsburg. Despite taking the lead twice, the Green-Whites left the pitch without anything to show for their efforts. “In the second half, we had Augsburg under control and had clear chances to make it 3-1, we let them back in it with our own mistakes,” commented Frank Baumann after the final whistle. What's more, an opportunity to take points off a direct rival was missed: “It’s very tough to take, we’re all very disappointed to have given everything away in the last minute,” said the sporting director.

WERDER.DE has all of the post-match reaction below.

On the game:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It’s a completely inexplicable loss. We weren’t clever enough, we went into the lead twice, had the game under control, had more possession and then punished ourselves. With mistakes like this we’re deservedly near the bottom of the table. We run, fight, are there for each other, create chances, sometimes play good football and nevertheless lose – it’s unbelievable. You should never lose a game like this.”

Frank Baumann: “We had the better of the game today, led twice but conceded like we did. We let them back into it out of nothing and were sloppy in the challenges. We just have to defend situations like that better, that’s been our main problem this season, we have to correct that urgently. It’s hard for me to comprehend why we defended so sloppily when we had the lead and also when it was 2-2.”

Max Kruse: “It’s hard to explain how we lost this game, after three games we haven’t scored a point. You can play as well as you want but when you’re away from home in the 70th minute with the lead, the whole team has to defend better. It was an amateurish defensive performance from us all.”

Alexander Nouri: “We’re all very down. The way we lost here today is extremely disappointing. I would have been satisfied with 2-2 considering how the game went. We controlled the game, were the better team in the second half particularly. However, then we had to make it 3-1. We didn’t do that and were punished for it. In the decisive moment we didn’t defend well, it’s more disappointing because we didn’t allow them much apart from that.”

Thomas Delaney: “I don’t have any words to describe what happened. We played well but then weren’t on the pitch for the last ten minutes and conceded two goals easily. We just have to be more aware when defending, we don’t reward ourselves with what we deserve.”

Robert Bauer: “Every one of us knows we were bad in the final minutes. Our heads are of course low in the dressing rooms, we’re all annoyed. Despite some good chances we didn’t seal the deal – that’s tough to take. After the last couple of games we had the feeling that we’re more solid at the back, but we conceded too easily. We have to defend our own goal better, the whole team has to stop the attack when it starts. That’s what is most annoying.”

Fin Bartels: “There’s just pure frustration after a game like this. We were in the lead twice and stand here at the end of the match empty-handed and nobody knows how. After we made it 2-1, Augsburg were finished but we missed the chances to decide the game. Then, we allowed ourselves to be overrun twice at the back. Perhaps we should have taken at least a point, even if that sounds like too little at first. In all three games this year we’ve had good spells but you don’t get anything for that. Points are all that count but for them we have to bring the game over the line.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “After making it 2-1 we had some chances on the counter where we should have decided the game. However, in our situation you don’t take advantage of your chances going forwards and concede at the back. When things aren’t going well, everything goes against you.”

On the position in the table:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The table says a few things, simply put it's a fight for survival. We now have to get points, we need them urgently, therefore we have to keep working hard and believe in the victory. We’re getting better but we can’t concede so much. We’ll change that next Saturday.

Frank Baumann: “We’re in a very, very tough situation. We near the bottom of the table and have to start scoring points immediately. Of course the disappointment is huge just a few minutes after a loss like this, but there’s no reason to give up now. We have to shake ourselves down, analyse the game and then take on the coming challenges.”

Alexander Nouri: “We said before the game we wanted to turn our good performances into wins and points. We couldn’t do that today, but I still have complete confidence in this team and I’m sure we’ll force the points home if we continue to perform like this.”

Fin Bartels: “After a game like this one it’s hard to find positive words, but we now have to analyse everything rigorously and lift our heads again.”
