Sometimes in professional football, everything can happen very fast. Exactly how fast is something Maximilian Eggestein experienced firsthand on Saturday afternoon, when Claudio Pizarro couldn’t continue playing against FC Bayern München after 17 minutes and was replaced by the youngster. Eggestein was given a lot of responsibility as he was thrown in at the deep end to play in a very important position just ahead of the defence, especially against stars of the world game like Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben. Nonetheless, his performance showed maturity and he received plenty of praise.

“It wasn’t an easy situation for Maxi to sit on the bench in these cold temperatures and then to suddenly have to come on and function properly against a team like FC Bayern,” acknowledged Frank Baumann. “However, he did a very good job and applied his qualities to a very important position. I’m very pleased with his performance.” What's more, despite “only” playing 71 minutes, Eggestein was still the player with most won tackles on the pitch (11).

Alexander Nouri also praised the older of the two Eggestein brothers. “It was very unfortunate that we had to replace Claudio so early in the game, but I was very happy with Maxi’s performance. He played a very good game,” commented the manager and immediately explained why he decided to change Bremen’s system with Eggestein’s substitution. “Maxi played in this position in training and in our friendly with Brugge and put in convincing performances. He can read the game, can think quickly and often makes the right choices.”

His teammates also noticed Eggestein’s solid performance against the record champions. “Out of all of us he was one of the best today,” said Zlatko Junuzovic. “He showed a lot of composure and great vision. He also always had a good idea up his sleeve. What else can you say, he really did well and inspired our game,” continued the Austrian international, who made his 150th Bundesliga appearances against FC Bayern.
