It is not often that the choice for the winner of the Man of the Match award is so clear-cut, but that is the case for the Green-Whites’ 5-2 away win against Freiburg this weekend. With three goals and an assist, Werder’s winter signing Thomas Delaney led his team to three important points. It was a memorable performance from the Dane, whose main duty usually is to provide stability in the middle of the park. “Thomas had an incredible game today, not just because of his goals,” said teammate Max Kruse, heaping praise on the midfielder.

Since his move to the Weser three months ago, Delaney has certainly left his mark. On the pitch, the defensive midfielder takes the game by the scruff of the neck while off it, he has already been accepted as one of the leaders in the dressing room. “He showed once again today how important he is for us. He is a winner, who transmits his team spirit and will power to the others. I’m happy he crowned a super team performance with his three goals,” noted head coach Alexander Nouri. Max Kruse added to his boss’ enthusiastic comments: “He has shown since day one that we can rely on him and that he’ll continue to help us. He sets an example that you always have to give 100 percent - we need guys like him.”

The 24 year old was an influence on the game going forwards, as well as in the defensive phases when Bremen didn’t have the ball. Offensively, he had the most shots (4), while at the same time he also managed to win the most tackles (11). “He provides balance to the midfield, works very well off the ball and can counter very well. If he is also as deadly in front of goal like he was today, then we’re obviously very happy,” said sporting director Frank Baumann.

Werder’s number six even surprised himself with his goals, shaking his head in disbelief after the game, revealing: “I’ve never scored more than one goal in a game before and today I scored three – it’s something new for me, a big surprise.” Neither in the Danish league, nor with his national side or in the Champions League has Delaney ever scored a hat trick, but he managed this feat in just his eighth Bundesliga outing. After also being voted Man of the Match against Mainz, it would not come as a huge surprise if by midweek he is again named the winner of the award for the second time this campaign.
