If you had asked the team at half time if they would be happy to come away with a point, most would have nodded. There was a very different feeling after the full-time whistle though. “It feels like two points dropped,” said captain Clemens Fritz. The Green-Whites had turned the game on its head to lead 2-1 thanks to a courageous second-half display. However, Alexandro Nouri’s charges had to settle for a share of the spoils with Darmstadt in the end. “We will take the positives from today’s game and have to make to do with the point,” said Nouri.

WERDER.DE gathered the key statements on matchday 6’s 2-2 draw with Darmstadt:

Thoughts on the game:

Alexander Nouri: “It feels like the game only really began in the second half. We weren’t tight enough to our man before the break; we gave our opponents too much room and were too passive – I wasn’t pleased with that. The team showed a reaction in the second half, were more committed and showed more courage, and that led to some goalscoring opportunities. Those are the positives that we can take away from that game.”

Clemens Fritz: “We didn’t get into the game in the first half. Darmstadt were stronger in the challenges and we didn’t show enough courage. We changed up our tactics for the second half and looked a lot better. We tried to find pockets of space, made Darmstadt do the running and deservedly went in front. We showed real desire and that was positive to see. The fact that we conceded two goals but allowed the opponents very little overall doesn’t reflect well on us though.”

Serge Gnabry: “We played too many long balls in the first half. We started to play football after the break and suddenly things were going a lot better. We could have ended up winning today, but we will have to defend certain situations better in future if we want to see out results. It’s difficult to pick up points when you keep on letting in goals.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “At the end of the day, a draw was a fair result. The first half was very stop-and-start, and then we were unlucky to go behind from the spot. We switched to a front two in the second half and had more bite, moved the ball about better and had more sight of goal. We had a couple of chances after their equaliser, but we will take the point.”

Thoughts on the league table:

Serge Gnabry: “We could havegot thethree points and we also could have taken points from the match against Mainz. Had we done that, we’d be in a more secure and relaxed position. But we’ve performed well in our last few games, played as a team and have shown character. So we won’t be burying our heads in the sand, but rather continue working hard.”

Clemens Fritz: “The situation is a little better than when we went into the first international break after the Bayern match, but of course four points after six matches is not enough. You can almost never say that an international break comes at a good time, but we will simply use the time to work intensively on our weaknesses.”

Thoughts on the penalty:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “The penalty was very unlucky. The opposition player was behind me, I couldn’t see him at all and I only touched him slightly. I hope other situations like this will go in our favour next time.”
