Many people had their eyes on Werder’s new signing Thomas Delaney in the team’s first training session on Monday. However it was also a special day for another Green-Whites man, namely Luca Caldirola, who completed his first training session since breaking his ankle at the beginning of September in the match against FC Augsburg. Florian Grillitsch was also back in action after he was forced out with a thigh problem just before the winter break.

Caldirola was clearly delighted to finally be back in training with his teammates after undertaking rehabilitation training by himself throughout December. “I was really happy to be back with the whole team after such a long time out with injury,” said the Werder defender. He added, “I put in a lot of work last month and also in the holidays so that I could catch up and now it’s just really fun working with the ball again.”

Werder coach Alexander Nouri was equally as optimistic about Caldirola’s return. “Luca will now gradually be integrated back into training more and more. We hope that he will be fully fit again within two weeks,” said the Green-Whites head coach.

Florian Grillitsch also returned to Bremen similarly well-prepared after the holiday period. The Austrian was back in first-team training just like Caldirola and joined in the first session with the ball. Both the returnees continued to work individually afterwards. “We’re clearly still a little bit behind in terms of our fitness,” admitted Grillitsch. “But now we have the training camp in Spain and we want to be fit and ready to go for the second half of the season right from the outset.”
