Luca Caldirola remains a Werder man! The 26-year old central defender has extended his contract with the club. His previous deal was due to run out this summer. Frank Baumann, Werder’s chief executive, revealed the news on Thursday afternoon.

“We are absolutely delighted that we have been able to agree on a new deal. Luca was unfortunately kept out for much of last season with two major injuries. He is an essential part of our planning in terms of the defence which is why we are happy that he will also be sporting the Werder shirt in the future,” said Baumann.

Head coach Alexander Nouri was keen to stress the quality that the left-footer brings to the team. “Luca is a defender that tackles well and is very versatile. He has proven time and again over the years how valuable he is for this team. I’m really pleased that we’ll have him for the future,” said a delighted Nouri.

Luca Caldirola himself was also thrilled to be extending his time with SV Werder. “I’m really glad that I can continue wearing the Werder shirt. After two serious injuries, I want to help the team on the pitch next season and give it all I’ve got,” said the bullish 26-year-old.

Luca Caldirola made the move to SV Werder from Inter Milan in 2013. The Italian has made 45 Bundesliga appearances since then as well as two outings cup games for the Green-Whites. After spending a season on loan at SV Darmstadt 98 in 2015/16, the defender spent months on the sidelines last season after breaking his ankle and foot.
