SV Werder fought with heart and spirit until the last minute against FC Bayern München, and came close to a memorable comeback. However, just like last week, the Green-Whites suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat. “In a certain way, it was very reminiscent of last week – there were a lot of parallel’s to last Saturday. Again, fine details decided the game against a top opponent and after a good game, we’re left empty handed,” said Alexander Nouri, who was nonetheless satisfied with his team’s performance and attitude.

After the final whistle, the atmosphere at a sold-out Weser-Stadion was a mix of pride thanks to the performance and disappointment about to the result. Despite the loss, Kruse, Delaney and Co. were applauded off the pitch and WERDER.DE went to find out what the overriding feeling was amongst the players and management.

On the game:

Thomas Delaney: “In the first half we made some mistakes which are punished more quickly by great teams like Bayern. In the second half we were maybe even the better side, so at the end of the day we’re very disappointed because we were so close to taking something from the game.”

Felix Wiedwald: “It was a very good team performance today. We defended well, allowed them little and created chances going forwards ourselves. Bayern’s class was displayed in their two goals, but conceding the free kick so shortly before half time is bitter. However, the team’s reaction showed that the coach said the right things at the break. It’s a shame to have not taken anything from the match.”

Max Kruse: “In the first half we played with a bit too much fear for my liking. At half time we regrouped, the coach said we should keep our heads up high. We trained the whole week to play in front of the fans and therefore we wanted to show everyone that we could hold our own - in footballing terms and in terms of fight. You also saw we have a lot of quality in our ranks, but the bottom line is that it’s our second loss in as many games after the winter break. Particularly considering the second half, we have to be angry about the result.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We stood compactly from the start but in the first half, Bayern’s individual class was decisive - you have to acknowledge that. After, we put in a great effort and showed great team spirit. Max Kruse’s goal gave us a lift for the final stages, but the final golden chance was missing. We tried everything and can’t be too critical of ourselves today.”

Alexander Nouri: “We were well organised, we supported one another. Then, two strokes of genius changed the game. In the dressing room at half time I said I liked how we were playing and that we shouldn’t give up. We showed the fans that we continued to play with heart and courage. We would have gladly rewarded ourselves with a point.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We fought superbly, showed passion and kept the game open against a top opponent. I'm proud of the team’s performance and we could have earned a point.”

On Max Kruse’s goal:

Zlatko Junozovic: “I received the ball from Santi and was in quite a lot of space. Max was then very well positioned in the box, I played him the ball and he deceived a really strong opponent. It was very well executed.”

Thomas Delaney: “We created the goal just like we wanted, we moved the ball forwards quickly. Then Max did really well.”

Alexander Nouri: “Max worked for the team today. I'm very happy that he was then rewarded with a goal.”

On the upcoming challenges:

Frank Baumann: “We know have to flip the switch in our heads, the next games will be completely different. We knew it would be a really tough start and now we have to press to get points. What people expect of us is now different.”

Alexander Nouri: “The way we performed today gives us confidence for the coming weeks, but earning points is now even more important. We just have to force the results home.”

Max Kruse: “Every game is important, irrespective of the opposition. We’ll work hard all week to get points from the coming matches. We have to build on this performance, then we’ll inevitably reap our rewards.”

On the personnel:

Alexander Nouri: “Claudio had a muscular problem in his thigh in the first half, I can’t give an exact prognosis at the moment. Niklas Moisander also has a thigh problem, we’ll also have to wait and see what the tests tell us. Fin had a cold and felt a bit run-down. He came to me this morning and we decided together that he couldn’t start. In the last few weeks he’s been incredibly important for us.”

Frank Baumann: “We again had to deal with an early injury today and make up for Claudio Pizarro’s substitution. However, we didn’t let it affect us and fought until the final whistle. In the end, fine details were decisive. We can build on this.”
