Some Werder players have to wait a little longer before they can enjoy their summer holiday. Why? Because they’ve got important roles to play as their international sides look to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Werder’s new addition Ludwig Augustinsson celebrated a pivotal win in a top-of-the-table clash against France in Group A. Meanwhile, Ulisses Garcia received his first call-up to the senior team, but did not come off of the bench as Switzerland claimed all three points nonetheless. Werder loanee László Kleinheisler suffered a shock defeat with Hungary as they were defeated 1-0. 

Werder’s new addition Ludwig Augustinsson was involved in a top-of-the-table Group A game against European Championship runners-up France in the Friends-Arena in Solna, Sweden, on Friday evening. With the score level at 1-1 against the Group A favourites for some time, Sweden’s Toivonen scored the winning goal in stoppage-time from his own half to sink the hopes of point for the French. Werder’s new left-back set up Durmaz’s equaliser which leveled the score, and he also played the entire game.

Ulisses Garcia was denied a debut on Friday evening. The SV Werder defend received his first call-up to the Swiss national team for a World Cup qualifier. Nevertheless, the Swiss outfit secured a 2-0 victory without the 21-year-old coming off the bench to help. 

László Kleinheisler was hoping for his evening to have gone a little better than it did. The Werder loanee played with Hungary against Andorra, but wasn’t able to stop a surprise upset as Andorra beat them 1-0. 

Centre-back Niklas Moisander was also in action last Wednesday. The captain of Finland had to settle for a draw in a friendly against Liechtenstein, with the game finishing 1-1.
