Another step in the right direction! On a run of five matches unbeaten, Werder extended their good run with an impressive away win at Freiburg. In the 5-2 win, Bremen scored five goals away from home for the first time in seven years. There were many positive aspects of Werder’s performance which Alexander Nouri noticed, “We’re very happy. This win gives us a head of steam going into the next few matches.” There is a real sense of togetherness running through the whole squad. Managing director Frank Baumann has already turned his attention to the coming games: “We know that there are still hard tests to come. The next tough task is on Tuesday.” The next step is the home match against Schalke on Tuesday night…

We caught up with some of the men involved in the game today and their thoughts are summarised below.

On the game:

Frank Baumann: “We needed to find our rhythm again after the internatonal break. Max’s wondergoal gave us the lead and we scored our second goal with our second chance. We were very effective.”

Max Kruse: “Not many teams score five goals away at Freiburg. It’s great that I scored and we won. I’m not know for goals from distance, in fact I can’t even remember my last goal from a long way out. But I’m happier that my goal contributed to a win. Today was an all-round successful day.”

Alexander Nouri: “I’m very happy. We were solid defensively and our transitional play was good. We were well-organised again. Max’s goal helped us a lot. It was another good team performance. This win gives us a head of steam going into the next few matches.”

Thomas Delaney: “In the first-half we were good defensively, but it wasn’t our best performance. Max’s goal and mine in first-half stoppage time were very important. After the break we were sloppy at the back at times. But, on the whole, we played a good away game. Self-belief is the most important thing and we have that at the moment.”

On the relegation battle:

Max Kruse: “We’re trying to win every game and we will continue to do that. The teams behind us aren’t letting up, therefore, we need to keep working hard.”

Alexander Nouri: “The Europa League is out of the question for us. We’re still trying to remain in the division and taking it one game at a time.”

Frank Baumann: “We’ve been making small steps forward over the last few weeks, collecting points and moving up the table. But we know that there are still hard tests to come. The next tough task is on Tuesday.”
