After hearing him speak to the press, you can imagine how he'll speak to his players in his team talks. In Monday afternoon's press conference, Alex Nouri spoke with passion about his new task over the coming days and what he expects from his team. He is committed to the challenge and raring to get started. The new interim coach demanded that Werder need to “send a message to the opposition, the fans and the city," and called on his players to “give everything and show energy.” However, it wasn’t Gnabry, Fritz, Bartels & Co. listening to him on this occasion, but rather the journalists at the press conference ahead of the Mainz game. Here are all the important quotes.

We got to know the 37-year-old fairly well during his almost 45 minute press conference. The well spoken coach, who normally coaches Werder’s U23s, laid out his plan for the next two days. “I want the players to have clear heads,” explained Nouri, who will be having constructive discussions to make that happen. “We want to work on the team’s image on as well as off the pitch and for the boys to take on responsibility. You are always more prepared to give your all when you have that feeling that you can influence things,” continued Nouri. It is all about developing the “overall plan”. You notice straight away that the coaching staff and squad’s mentality is important to the Buxtehude-born coach. He wants to see the players both supporting and pushing each other at the same time.

It's about the team and not about me.

Rebuilding the team moral after four disappointing losses will be an important job for the interim coach. “It’s important for us to find our attitude again. It wouldn’t be good for us to look back and pick out places where we made mistakes in the past few weeks,” stated Nouri, giving us a glimpse of what he will be communicating to the team.

The way the job will help his future career perspectives is secondary to Nouri. His working day had begun at 08:00 CEST as he began to mull over the necessary details that will help him to change the club’s fortunes in the short term. “It’s about the team and not about me. Obviously, this job is a dream for me but I am staying grounded. I am always open to input and intensive discussions. You don’t gain anything from being arrogant,” explained Nouri.

It was clear to see that he can’t wait to get down to work. An attitude he expects his team to have in the final two training sessions before Wednesday, when he will be hoping his team sends a clear message against Mainz 05.
