There are easier tasks than explaining what went wrong following elimination from the DFB Cup at the hands of a third division side. Viktor Skripnik would have most definitely wanted to speak about a successful start to the season with the journalists present on Monday morning, instead, he was forced to pick apart his team’s performance from the 2-1 loss to the underdogs from Lotte: “We put in an awful performance and have to apologise to the fans. It was an avoidable defeat which we will be rightly criticised for,” explained Skripnik.

The coaching staff have begun the rebuilding process straight away in the short week of preparation ahead of the Bundesliga opener against record winners Bayern München. “We have spoken with the team and we all agree that we screwed up. That isn’t enough though; we now have to back up all the words with our actions on the pitch. We are expecting to see a reaction,” stated Skripnik, who was annoyed by the poor performance. The training free Tuesday that was originally on the schedule to aid recovery has been scrapped and instead the team will be deeply analysing the defeat.

Frank Baumann was of a similar opinion to Skripnik: “The team has been very self-critical following the game and the coaching team has made them aware of a number of mistakes: “It’s now our duty to do something about it.” Baumann is expecting a “courageous” performance against Munich, who cantered to a 5-0 win over Carl-Zeiss Jena in the cup. The team can’t show up to the Bavarian capital with the same body language they showed on the weekend: “Everyone knows what the result will be if we put in a similarly half-hearted performance.”

The Werder head coach will be relying on his experienced players such as Fritz, Junuzovic, Bartels and Co. to take on the responsibility and keep their concentration against the defending German champions. The players were brought away from their own game too easily in Lotte after being riled up by the hosts’ provocations. They will be hoping to stay focused on their own game in Munich in order to avoid another painful defeat.
