Sané played in a number of positions in Bordeaux. The Centre-back or defensive midfielder sees himself as a very versatile player, and he also knows what it is like to lead. Before Sané injured his knee, he wore the captain’s armband for one and a half years at his previous club. “I am an experienced player, who knows the role as a leader very well. The fans can expect that from me in Bremen too”, says Sané. He has made 190 appearances in the French first division, as well as 23 appearances in the Europa and Champions League. He has run out for Senegal 31 times.
And now because of his injury and recent transfer, Sané is looking towards a new beginning. “We are very confident that he will reach the desired level of fitness in the next few weeks. Then he will be able to take up a big role at the club, as is expected of him”, says Baumann, who went on to explain why Werder are pinning so much hope on the Senegal international: “We need a conscious physical presence in the heart of our defence. Lamine fits perfectly into this role. He also has a lot of quality when it comes to building play from the back, tackling, aerial ability and tactical awareness. It was very important that we found the full package”, says the sporting director.
