It’s all confirmed – and it all went by like a blur. Lamine Sané’s contract signing was followed by a short photo-shoot and an interview with WERDER.TV before he flew back to France. The massive centre-back will be returning from Bordeaux to Bremen on the weekend. The 29-year-old has a good idea of what the Bundesliga will hold despite only making a brief visit: “I’ve already been following the Bundesliga for a long time. Obviously, because my little brother Salif plays for Hannover. I’ve been a fan of Werder ever since I was small and Johan Micoud was playing here. There, it wasn’t a difficult decision for me to choose Werder,” explained Sané.

Lamine’s brother Salif, who has been on Hannover’s books since 2013, helped him with his decision: “He told me a lot about Germany and the culture but mostly about the Bundesliga; the full stadiums, the atmosphere and the style of football,” said Werder’s new defensive addition.

Another person who was important in the defensive man’s decision was Papy Djilobodji. Sané contacted his fellow countryman, who played for Werder during the second half of last season, straight away. “I have played with him for Senegal and I asked him about the club. He was able to explain a lot to me. Furthermore, I have also played with Sambou Yatabaré back at Bastia,” said Sané, who has made 31 international appearances for his country since his debut in 2010.

Yatabaré and Sané played each other twice with Bastia and Bordeaux respectively and both have a 1-0 win to their name from the encounters in Ligue 1. They will be on the same side for Borussia in the Bundesliga though. “Werder is a club with a long tradition in Germany, which I have followed since the days when Johan Micoud and Valerien Ismael were a part of the club,” said Sané. He wants to discover everything else this weekend: “I will be able to meet my new team mates then and I am excited to explore the city.”
