Werder to face Chelsea

The pre-season friendly against Lazio may have been cancelled, but the Green-Whites have found a real cracker of a replacement – SV Werder Bremen will face Premier League side Chelsea FC on Sunday, 7th August at the Weser-Stadion (kick-off 15:00 CEST). "We’re happy that we’ve been able to find such an attractive opponent to kick off our season in such a short time. First of all, huge thanks must go out to Lazio, who reacted understandingly to the cancellation of our friendly, and also to our commercial partner Match-IQ, who worked fantastically to set up such an impressive duel in a very short time," said Werder chairman Klaus Filbry.

Werder will be facing a top opponent in Chelsea. Coached by Antonio Conte, who recently led the Italy national team to the quarter final of the European Championship, the Blues boast stars such as Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Gary Cahill and John Terry. A clash with the five-time Premier League champions could also set up a return to the Weser-Stadion for Papy Djilobodji. Chelsea were guests at the Weser-Stadion just two years ago, in August 2014 – and that game ended with a 3-0 victory for the Green-Whites.
