SV Werder Bremen have cancelled their friendly with Lazio, originally planned for Saturday, 6th August at the Weser-Stadion. Club chairman Klaus Filbry confirmed the news on Friday morning. “The evidence that radical right-wing groups will use the game as a platform for their own agenda has become more substantial. It has been confirmed to us by various sources. We don’t want to offer that publicity in a friendly match. Beyond that, we’re not willing to increase the security measures for what was supposed to be a family-friendly pre-season highlight to a level that shouldn’t be necessary. That is why we have reached an agreement with Lazio to cancel the friendly.”

Those who have already purchased tickets for the match against Lazio can of course return them. “However, perhaps it is worth waiting on that front,” says Filbry. “We’re currently looking for a similarly attractive opponent for that weekend. The tickets purchased already would also be valid for that game.”
