The 18-year-old has fulfilled one of his dreams by signing his first professional contract: “Every young footballer works towards this goal. However, I am also aware that it is only the first step in my development”, says Schmidt, who was with the U23s in their training camp in Belek during the winter preparation. “That was a very valuable experience for me. Now I want to keep making good impressions, and move from the U23s to the first team."
The fact that both Johannes Eggestein and Niklas Schmidt have committed long-term to Werder, underlines once again the lasting youth work at the Weser. “We are pleased that after Johannes, Niklas has also taken the first step in his professional career. It is a confirmation of our philosophy, and proof of our great work in promoting young talent”, says Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, managing director of the youth academy.
Niklas Schmidt moved to the Werder youth academy from FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 2012. After the U15s and U17s, the youth international played for the U19s, where he celebrated winning the title in the Bundesliga Nord/Nordost.
