Waking up early is no issue for Lennart Thy. In fact, you get the impression that he actually enjoys the early starts. So it would only seem right that we have arranged an unusual interview time with the reliable Werder striker, of eight in the morning. “It’s all a matter of adapting,” explains the Frechen-born player, who grew up in the town of Norden. However, punctuality and discipline are just two of Thy’s strong points. He manages to breeze through his every day routine with an inner calm and composure, something he developed growing up in close proximity to the North Sea and something he has maintained after moving to Bremen.

The 24-year-old set his alarm extra early to speak to WERDER.DE. In today’s “4-4-2”  interview, Thy answers four sport, four personal and two wildcard questions, including what special memory he has of Mario Götze, what people from Hamburg can learn from Bremen folk and what luxury he occasionally indulges in.

Four sports-based questions

# If you hadn’t become a professional footballer…

“I would have moved abroad and then probably still gone on to study something within the field of sport, but I didn’t really have any concrete plans. Going abroad and seeing the world has always appealed to me. I think North America and Australia are great. The main thing would be exploring far-flung places and getting out of Europe. But I am still young and who knows what is still to come.”

# My favourite shirt-swap is...

“...from my first season in the Bundesliga. In one of my first appearances I swapped shirts with Mario Götze, who was still playing for Dortmund back then. He wore the number 31 shirt and I still have it at home, but I haven’t managed to hang it up yet.”

# St. Pauli is a special club because...

“...much like Werder, everyone sticks together. They live and breath football and there is a strong connection between the fans, the town and the team. You notice that even during difficult periods, which I went through twice in my time there. The players are not booed after a defeat, rather everyone sticks together. Another thing is the fact that the club is located righ in the centre, which definitely contributes to a particularly strong connection with the town. St. Pauli is definitely a remarkable club with quite few parallels to Werder. You could see against Mainz that when we bust a gut, we are still applauded off the pitch, even though we suffered an unlucky defeat. The same thing would happen at St. Pauli.

# If I was put at centre-half for a game...

“...I would just keep spraying diagonal passes! (laughs)”

Four personal questions

# My childhood hero is...

“...Harry Potter. I have seen all the films and read all of the books. I have glanced through the first four at least! But the films were thrilling. The character was always around the same age as me, so you could say that Harry Potter grew up at the same time as me.”

# A luxury that I sometimes indulge in is...

“...a really nice cut of meat. I am worried that I will mess it up if I cook it at home, which would be a shame. So I tend to go to “The Grill” or “Loui & Jules Grillboutique” instead.

# In the car I love listening to...

“...R’n’B or Hip-Hop and sometimes also German rap. I’ve also managed to get into reggaeton through a Columbian friend of mine. To be honest though, I listen to all kinds of music.

# If I could be someone else for a day, I would be...

“...Kevin Hart, the comedian. I can’t tell any good jokes myself, so it would it be fun to be able to be in his body and make people laugh on a daily basis.”

Two wildcard questions

# What can the people of Hamburg learn from the people of Bremen?

“How to make a good fish butty!"

# The best thing about the town of Norden?

“That’s a tough one to answer. The best thing about Norden, where I grew up, is definitely the calmness. It is a very small town. When I go back, I know immediately that I have my friends and family there, but there really isn’t a lot else on offer. In contrast to big cities like Hamburg, the lifestyle there is really laid-back. That’s what I really enjoy.
