A semi-final away from home… For the fourth time this season, Werder get on the road for a cup tie, this time to clear favourites and 17-time cup winners Bayern. Tomorrow evening at 20:30 CEST, Werder kick-off in the Allianz. "We have nothing to lose," said Clemens Fritz after the important 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg. The captain has played in the final at the Olympiastadion twice, once lifting the cup in 2009. Werder want to take the confidence from the last game into the one against Bayern so that they can get into the final for the eleventh time in the club’s history.

Did you know that…

… the two most successful cup teams are meeting in the semi-final? Bayern have won the DFB Cup a massive 17 times, while Bremen are second with six wins.

… Werder’s record-goalscorer Claudio Pizarro has a number of records to his name? Not only is he the foreign player who has been in the most cup finals with eight, but he is also the foreign player to have lifted the cup itself the most times (6). Bastian Schweinsteiger has also made eight appearances in a cup final. Kahn made it to Berlins seven times while Oliver Reck, Dieter Eilts and Philipp Lahm have been on six occasions. Piza is also the highest scoring foreign player in the competition with 30 goals from 52 games for both Bayern and Werder.

… Werder very often get drawn away from home? The trip to Munich is the twelfth journey in the last 13 cup ties for the Green.-Whites. The last home draw was a 1-0 win against Köln earlier in this year’s cup run. In the 2008/09 season Werder became the first team to have won the cup having played only away games.

… Werder have been taken to the most penalty shoot-outs in the DFB Cup? 13 times Werder have been forced to look for a win from the penalty

… Werder’s most prolific cup goalscorer this season has scored three times in the competition? Anthony Ujah got a goal to his name in the first three rounds of the cup against Würzburg, Gladbach and Köln. He didn’t manage one against Leverkusen. Robert Lewandowski is Bayern’s top scorer in the DFB Cup, also with three up until now.

… Werder haven’t made the last four of the competition since the final appearance in the 2009/10 season? The quarter-final is the furthest stage Werder have reached since, but they weren’t able to beat Arminia Bielefeld that time round.

... Bayern and Bremen will meet each other for the eighth time in the DFB Cup? This is the first time in the semis but from the previous seven encounters Bayern have been victorious in six. The last DFB Cup victory against the Bavarian side came in 1999 through penalty kicks which Werder won 5-4.
