An annoying end to an intense Nordderby. On the 31st matchday of the Bundesliga, Werder travelled to a sold out Volksparkstadion and lost 2-1 in the 104th derby between Hamburg and the Green-Whites. At the end of a mammoth week in which Werder had three games in six days, Lasogga found the net after just five minutes and then doubled his own goal tally after 32. Ujah got one back in the second half after Pizarro missed a penalty but the game had already been lost.

Line-up and formation: Just three days after Werder kicked off in Munich, they began the first half of their next match in Hamburg. Viktor Skripnik made just one change from the team that lost in the DFB Cup as Sternberg made way for Santiago Garcia at left back. The head coach opted for his usual 4-1-4-1 formation, led by Pizarro.

Lasogga first half brace

Match highlights:

5’ Goal Hamburg. Not a good start for Bremen, HSV pile the pressure on early and Müller gets through, crosses to Lasogga who passes into an open net at the back post.

18’ Werder’s first chance of the game is created by Yatabaré, who lofts a ball over to Bartels. The midfielder takes a touch but then slices the volley wide. A good move from the away side.

24’ Close again form Werder. Grillitsch breaks through and bears down on the keeper but his effort is saved. Could’ve been the equaliser.

30’ Felix Wiedwald makes a world class save from Gregoritsch’s header at the near post! He did so well to get there after the attacker had a free header.

32’ Goal Hamburg, 2-0. Lasogga completes his brace. This time Wiedwald can’t keep it out. Ostrzolek crosses and the Hamburg striker heads in the near post, nothing the keeper could do.

40‘ Clemens Fritz tries to hit one from distance but Drobny just gets his fingertips to it and tips it round the post.

45’ Half-time. A poor showing from the Green-Whites in the first half. We’ll need better if we’re to get something from the game.

Character and a Ujah goal

47’ Yatabaré shoots over from inside the box. Werder have started the second half well.

56’ Penalty for Bremen! Djourou fouls Pizarro inside the area and the referee points the spot!

57’ Pizarro misses! What a huge chance that was for the Green.-Whites. They may live to regret that.

65’ GOOOAAAL WERDER! Ujah receives the ball, shoots and heads in the rebound from close range after Drobny made initial contact. Game on!

88‘ Djilobodji tries an effort from 18 yards but it lacks pace. The pressure from Bremen has been relentless but no equaliser yet.

90+5’ Full-time. That’s it. The Nordderby ends 2-1.

Summary: After a very poor start to the game, HSV unsurprisingly led 2-0 at the break. Neither case was defended well. Bremen were left with a mountain to climb and came out in the second half raring to go, but just couldn’t jump over the final hurdle which was getting the equaliser. A tough night for the Green-Whites but we will go again next week. It may well be an easier task for the boys considering the difficult circumstances of the busy week, but time will tell.
