Werder Bremen lose important home game to competitors Augsburg. After Grillitsch put the Green-Whites 1-0 up with his first ever Bundesliga goal, Werder gave the game away and lost it late on as Hong scored in the 87th minute. Finnbogason equalised for the away side shortly after the second half began.

Line-up and formation: Skripnik made two changes from the team that faced Dortmund and Sternberg and Yatabaré made way for Öztunali and Bartels. Fritz returned to the starting XI but Pizarro remains injured. The coach opted for a 4-1-4-1 formation to take on Augsburg.

Tentative start, Werder dominate

5’ Werder have started well. Vestergaard has an early chance after meeting a corner, but it is blocked. Gebre Selassie tries an overhead-kick from the rebound but it’s wide.

10’ Werder continue to pressurise, getting forward with the ball well. Yet to create another decent opportunity.

18’ Junuzovic puts in a dangerous-looking free-kick and it’s flicked on, but Öztunali can’t quite get a clean strike at the back post.

29’ Öztunali continues to cause trouble down the right wing. He cuts inside and works a shooting opportunity, but his final effort was weak.

43’ GOAL! Werder lead 1-0 as Grillitsch takes a touch inside on the edge of the box then smashes it low past Hitz in the bottom corner! What a goal!

45' Half-time and Werder lead, deservedly.

Finnbogason and Hong sink SVW

53’ Goal Augsburg. A poor start to the second half and the visitors equalise as Caiuby breaks down the left wing and crosses to Finnbogason who turns it into the near post.

65’ Chance for Bremen as Gebre Selassie is unmarked and sends a header over the bar from close in. A chance that the home side could rue missing.

70’ Unlucky! Another great headed opportunity as Vestergaard meets the cross, heads it down but it’s blocked on the line.

79’ Werder had most of the bal and chances in the half but no success as of yet. Yatabaré and Kleinheisler are both on.

87’ Unbelievable. A counter from Augsburg sees Baier cross to Hong, who directs the ball in past Wiedwald.

90+3’ Wiedwald is up for the corner and wins the header but puts it wide of the mark. That’s the last act of the game and the ref blows for full-time.

Conclusion: The plan was to get three points in front of the home fans but it wasn’t to be for Werder Bremen today. There is a lot of disappointment after the 2-1 loss having dominated most of the play. The home side were caught out by two counters, both of which resulted in Augsburg goals. Great chances to take the lead were passed up and the team can only have themselves to blame.
