A point apiece for Werder Bremen and SV Darmstadt 98, after what was a hard-fought, entertaining 90 minutes of football. Werder arguably enjoyed the better of the chances, but in the end were lucky to grab a point after a late Pizarro goal to make it 2-2. Earlier in the game, Ujah had scored the opening goal before Wagner equalised from the penalty spot shortly before half time. The visitors then took the lead through a set piece against the run of play, before Pizarro’s 88th minute thumping header secured a point for the Green Whites.

There was no doubting the importance of SV Darmstadt 98’s visit to the Weser Stadion on matchday 23, with just four points separating the relegation-threatened sides. Ahead of the match, Djilbodji reiterated this saying that they needed to fight harder than their opposition should they wish to leave the pitch with any points. Skripnik unsurprisingly named a strong side for the Bundesliga clash, with Yatabare being handed his first start in the green and white of Werder Bremen. Vestergaard returned to the centre of defence, with Galvez dropping to the bench. Junuzovic also made a return to the starting XI, with Fröde making way for the captain on the day. The back four in front of Wiedwald was therefore Theodor Gebre Selassie, Jannik Vestergaard, Papy Djilobodji and Santiago Garcia, with Fin Bartels, Sambou Yatabare, Zlatko Junuzovic, Florian Grillitsch looking to win the midfield battle against the newly-promoted side. Up front, Pizarro and Ujah made up a dangerous attacking line in Skripnik’s 4-4-2 system.

First half: Ujah scores, Wagner equalises

(12’) A cagey opening period meant that chances were largely few and far between. The first chance of note though fell to Junuzovic, who dragged his shot wide after a dangerous Werder counter attack.

(13’) The visitors confirmed soon afterwards that they had real intentions of getting a result with Wagner firing over from inside the box.

(22’) They threatened again, with Rauch lining one up from the edge of the box but Wiedwald is there to tip the ball around the post - great save.

(33’) GOAL! It’s that man again, as Anthony Ujah is in the right place at the right time to hook in Yatabare’s nod down. A lovely finish and the hosts take the lead.

(44’) Goal for Darmstadt. Wagner is played through one on one with a clever ball, and Wiedwald is deemed to have unfairly brought down the Darmstadt striker. Wiedwald is booked and Wagner slots the resulting penalty home. 1-1.

Half time. After an evenly-matched, hard-fought 45 minutes of football, the sides go in with a goal apiece.

Second half: Pizarro saves Werder a point

(51’) The first chance of the second half belonged to the hosts, with Selassie showing his attacking threat down the right wing before cutting the ball back to Ujah. His attempted shot is blocked at the last minute by a good sliding challenge.

(62’) Ujah almost gives the hosts the lead but his acrobatic attempt in the box is no trouble for Mathenia in the Darmstadt goal.

(68’) So close! Excellent goalkeeping from Mathenia as he denies Ujah from close range! Pizarro can’t get the rebound over the line. Still 1-1.

(82’) Goal for the visitors. A long free kick is flicked over the onrushing Wiedwald by  Sulu after he had beaten the Werder offside trap - 1-2.

(87’) Werder so close to the equaliser after Sulu deflects a Werder cross towards his own goal, but Mathenia gets across quickly to claim the ball

(88’) Again it’s Mathenia to the rescue for Darmstadt, as he makes an exceptional save to deny Pizarro from five yards out.

(88’) GOAL WERDER! From the resulting corner, Pizarro rises highest to nod the ball home to level the scores. His sixth league goal of the season, and what an important one too.

Full time. The points are shared here in Bremen, as the game ends 2-2.
