A big task awaits Werder’s new sporting director Frank Baumann as he begins in his new role. The 43-year-old has the job of planning a squad for the next Bundesliga season. “Currently we have 36 professional players on our books which is definitely too many. We are looking at having a squad of around 25 or 26 players. That means there will be some transfers both in and out of the club. I have my ideas and have been talking with the coaching staff,” said Baumann at his official press conference on Friday afternoon.

In his inaugural press conference, Werder’s managing director cleared up many things, including the situation of players who are out on loan, players currently on loan at Werder from other clubs, as well as the transfer rumours surrounding the Green-Whites.

WERDER.DE has rounded up the important quotes from Baumann’s press conference. Baumann on…

…Jannik Vestergaard: “The situation is clear – Jannik has a contract with us. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement for the transfer to be possible but that isn’t the case yet. He has told us of his desire to move and he has an agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach All sides have been completely fair and open. Nevertheless, I will be having a conversation with him as the situation demands it. We have spoken to him on the phone but a face-to-face meeting will follow. He is an important component of our team, in terms of character and ability. I will fight to keep him; we will try and convince him of what my ideas are and the way we want to use him in future.”

…Anthony Ujah: “There is absolutely no desire to sell him. Tony has shown his worth to the team this season with some brilliant performances. That is something that we don’t want to change for next season. It is obvious that Anthony is unhappy when he isn’t getting games as he is very ambitious. He played a decisive part in us winning the last few matches.“

…Johannes Eggestein: “His contract will expire at the end of June. We have been holding talks with Johannes about a contract extension for a while now and they have been positive according to Tim Steidten. The youth coaches have also been involved. He is a player who has understandably attracted the interests of top clubs both in and outside of Germany. Nevertheless, we are optimistic that he will choose to stay with us after presenting our plans to him. He will be giving us a decision in the next two or three days. The talks are over, now we have to wait.”

…Felix Kroos: “We have a number of players in his position. That is why it would be difficult to guarantee him his preferred amount of playing time regardless of the coach. We are in talks with Union Berlin. It is possible that they will finish with him moving to the club. It isn’t a sure thing but things are on the right track.”

…the other players out on loan: “I have been speaking with Viktor Skripnik and Tim Steidten to create an intensive overview. I would like to get a personal impression of every player, even the ones who will probably come back. We will have to see if the players want to carry on with us or move away. That will now be one of the most important building blocks in the next few weeks.”

...Niclas Füllkrug: “We have chosen not to exercise our buy-back clause. I have spoken with Niclas Füllkrug on the phone as well as FC Nürnberg to let them know our decision. The deciding factor was that we a very well stocked up front. Bringing him back to the club wouldn’t make any sense considering how well he has developed in the past few years.”

…Florian Grillitsch: “It’s correct that we would like to extend his contract. I have been in contact with both the player and his agent. There is no impending decision but we are hopeful that we will persuade him to extend.”

…Mateo Pavlovic: “His contract will run out in the summer and we will not be extending it.”

…Santiago Garcia and Alejandro Gálvez: “The players haven’t been given any particular offers. It is true that we have been in contract negotiations but no agreement has been reached as of yet. Garcia has a brilliant mentality is amazing around the club and in the team. He is one of our top performers down the left side. We would like to keep hold of Alex Gálvez as well due to the demand for players in the centre of defence.
