“I am sure most people who’ve been following the EUROS will have seen plenty videos on the internet of Iceland fans celebrating. After the England game the capital city, Reykjavik, was full of people celebrating out in the streets, singing, and letting off fireworks through the night. It’s brilliant to see how the whole country is coming together through football and celebrating with the team,” said Jóhannsson, who began his career with capital city club Fjölnir and played for his parent country up until U21 level before he decided to play for the US national team. Jóhannsson has dual citizenship in America and Iceland.
For the 25-year-old, as for all of his fellow countrymen, the recent success of the national team has come as a true surprise. “No one expected anything whatsoever from them. After the US national team had already done very well at the Copa America, it was obviously doubly special to see Iceland do so well at the EUROS. It’s been truly impressive so far,” explained Jóhannsson.
The time spent in his home country has done him a lot of good. The recovery programme went well, and now the next step awaits the attacker in Bremen. “It was brilliant to have my family and friends around me again. After such a long and frustrating injury it was very important for me. I am very thankful to Werder for making this possible,” said Jóhannsson, before adding: “I’m definitely feeling a lot better, but it’s difficult to say when I’ll be able to train with the team again. I will be back in the stadium on Thursday training with the physiotherapists, so we’ll see from there how things are.”
