Since January this year it has been official. Lennart Thy is returning to the Weser from FC St Pauli after four years. Thy has already found an apartment that isn’t too far away from the Weser-Stadion, meaning he won’t have to stay in a flat share anymore, like he did when he made his debut for the Green-Whites, while living with his friend Florian Trinks. The 24-year-old has matured and developed through his time on and around the pitch during his time in Hamburg.

WERDER.DE used his summer visit to the Weser-Stadion to take the opportunity to stroll through the changing rooms with him, gaze across the pitch, which he will want to play on next year in the Bundesliga, and look back on how he matured during his time at Millertor.

WERDER.DE: Welcome back to Werder, Lennart. What was it that made you want to return to the Green-Whites?

Lennart Thy: “I wanted to do something new after four years in Hamburg, or should I say “old new”, and take the next step by proving myself in the Bundesliga. Here in Bremen it’s familiar territory which couldn’t be better for me.”

WERDER.DE: You moved to second division side St. Pauli in 2012 after five years at Bremen. Was this the right decision in hindsight?

Lennart Thy: “I believe it was the right step to move away to begin with. I had a great time at St. Pauli. I really developed during my four years there both on the pitch and as a person. Even the last year at Sankt Pault was very pleasant for me, but I am happy to be here at Werder now.”

I will be giving my all from the very beginning!

WERDER.DE: In what way did you develop in Hamburg?

Lennart Thy: “I think that I have become a more mature individual overall. Hamburg is a brilliant and vibrant city and I have learnt a lot from the change of scenery. You can see that the second division is more physical as far as the style of football is concerned. I had to adapt to that to begin with but I did a good job of it. I hope that the Bundesliga will be the next step forward.”

WERDER.DE: Have you set yourself any definite targets for your second spell at SV Werder?

Lennart Thy: “I managed to become a regular in the team in Hamburg and I hope that I can break into the side here for the long term. I will be giving my all from the very beginning to make that happen. We will see how things turn out in the end. It’s important that I prepare well and put myself forward, and then we can see.”

WERDER.DE: Despite your commitments at the “neighbourhood club”, were you able to keep an eye on Werder’s performances in the Bundesliga?

Lennart Thy: “Yeah, of course. I watched Werder’s matches particularly intently after my move to the club was confirmed. For example, I was in the Weser Stadion for the 6-2 win over Stuttgart and followed the final match of the season on television.”

WERDER.DE: What did you think of the amazing atmosphere created by the Green-Whites’ fans at that brilliant match and the city’s general support for team during the crunch game against Frankfurt?

Lennart Thy: “It was simply outstanding. The atmosphere in the stadium against VfB was absolutely wonderful. I had tickets for seats in the Westkurve but the fans stood for the full 90 minutes. The way that the whole city is crazy for Werder and follows the team is something unique. There was no other topic of conversation when I was walking around the city. The fact that everything worked out in the end was brilliant for everyone.”

WERDER.DE: Fin Bartels is another former player from St. Pauli who you linked up with at St. Pauli. Are you still in contact with him?

Lennart Thy: “Fin is my best mate so we would have kept in contact anyway. We speak a lot with one another and I will definitely still visit him during the holidays. I was constantly writing to him towards the end of the season, for example before the Stuttgart game I told him, ‘Score a goal to wrap it up!’ Needless to say, he definitely managed that (laughs). I am looking forward to playing with him again.”
