SV Werder Bremen will face Sportfreunde Lotte in the first round of the 2016/17 DFB Cup, with the tie taking place in mid-August (19th-22nd). Further scheduling details will be announced in due course.

"Lotte won promotion to the third division at the end of the season and will be looking forward to the game. We saw how tough matches like this can be last year when we faced Würzburg. We want to progress as far as possible though," said Frank Baumann. "The short journey is ideal for the supporters. I’m sure lots will come out to back us," he added.

"Teams from the third decision traditionally make life extremely tough for their opponents. We want to make sure that we don’t come unstuck. We’ll make sure that we’re in a position to reach the second round," explained head coach Viktor Skripnik.

VfL Sportfreunde Lotte won the Regionalliga West title convincingly last season, finishing 15 points clear of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s reserves, who came second. Promotion was sealed thanks to a 2-0 aggregate victory over SV Waldhof Mannheim in the play-offs.
