SV Werder Bremen are heading into the future with a new setup. Werder’s chairman of the supervisory board Marco Bode confirmed on Thursday morning that chief executive and sporting director Thomas Eichin has left the club with immediate effect. “We would like to thank him for his work over the last three years. He has played an important role in stabilising Werder during a difficult period. However, during our discussions regarding the club’s future, we realised that there was a clash of ideas, which has prompted the decision to have someone else take on the responsibility in that department,” said Bode.

Frank Baumann will assume Eichin's responsibilities at the club. Werder’s honorary captain will begin his duties in the coming week. The 40-year-old was part of the backroom staff at Werder until summer 2015, working as the director of first-team football and scouting. He chose to leave SVW last year to take a break from professional football. “He feels that he is ready to take on this job. We will discuss all the details in the coming days,” explained Bode.

Frank Baumann, who has lived with his family in Bremen since 1999, is ready to embrace the challenge. “I’m happy to take on responsibility at SV Werder once more. I have been able to take a step back in the past year and reflect on my work so far, but also gather ideas and educate myself,” said Würzburg-born Baumann, who will be presented to the media in the coming week. “After that, I will have intensive talks with all the relevant people to quickly get an overview of situation,” said Baumann.

Baumann played for Werder between 1999 and 2009, also wearing the captain's armband for nine years and leading the club to the double in 2004. He ended his playing career in 2009 off the back of another DFB Cup win and became part of the Green-Whites' backroom staff as assistant to then chief executive Klaus Allofs. He took over the scouting department in late 2011, before then becoming director of first-team football and scoring in November 2012.
