Werder against Bayern. Under the floodlights. Cup semi-final. Some will say it’s the highlight of the season, though others will argue the importance of Friday’s Bundesliga derby against Hamburger SV is far greater. “The most important match is always the next one,” claimed captain Clemens Fritz during today’s press conference ahead of the cup semi-final against the champions elect and Champions League semi-finalists. “The next opponent is Munich, then we worry about HSV. Preparations for the league match won’t begin until Wednesday morning.” Right now the whole team is focused on Bayern.

There is no question who the favourites are, but there is no doubt that Werder are going to Munich to win. “It’s our duty to believe we can win. We will head to Munich with courage,” told Fritz. The Werder captain can certainly take confidence from his side’s performances in previous rounds in the cup this season. “We showed in Gladbach and Leverkusen that we can punch above our weight. Belief is the most important, then you have a chance. Of course it will be difficult.”

Despite some forgettable cup performances in recent years, Fritz has plenty of positive memories to call upon. Werder won the cup back in 2009 and were in the final in 2010. “When you have the chance to get to the final, you want to do so at all costs. It’s worth the extra workload.”  The 37-year-old has spent spoken highly about the final in Berlin to his teammates. But “everyone knows what an experience that would be. We are in the semis. Everyone knows what that means. In the changing room, we’ve had no time to discuss Berlin,” said Fritz.
