Claudio Pizarro has rewritten the SV Werder Bremen record books. The Peru international

opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of Saturday’s game against Wolfsburg. This strike meant that he has now scored 102 Bundesliga goals for the club, making him the outright leading scorer in

Werder’s top-flight history. He is one clear of previous holder Marco Bode. “It means a lot to me. I now have to score as many goals as possible in order to make sure that no one can catch me

anytime soon,” Pizarro said with a smile.

But it wasn’t just the new record that brought out Pizarro’s smile; after all, they had just recorded a fully deserved 3-2 victory against Wolfsburg. The veteran was happy about the important three points despite his limited fitness: “I wasn’t totally ready unfortunately. I didn’t think that I would be able to play at all because I was still in pain. But the head coach said that he needed me,” explained Pizarro. The atmosphere inside the Weser-Stadium was another reason for him to be in a good mood after the game. “The fans always supported us, despite struggling at home this term. That was for the,” declared the forward.

The 37-year-old was once again praised all around by his team mates for his fantastic abilities. Fin Bartels, explained: “Claudio is in top form. The things he is able to pull off are simply sensational. I hope that he can add a couple more goals to his tally and that we can celebrate his achievement after avoiding relegation.” Zlatko Junuzovic congratulated Pizarro on an “outstanding career” and branded him a “world class player”. “We need his goals,” added Junuzovic.

Viktor Skripnik values the qualities of his striker: “We always emphasise how important he is for the team and we saw it once again today. It’s important that his injury didn’t get worse today.” On Tuesday Bremen contend the semi-finals of the DFB Cup against FC Bayern in Munich, Pizarro’s second home in Germany. Until then the new record holder will rest, enjoy the milestone and wait for the next chance to add more goals.
