Relief was rife after the final whistle as the victory over Champions League quarter-finalists Wolfsburg was confirmed. After the match we caught up with the players and management to see what they had to say about the excellent victory.

On the game:

Sambou Yatabaré: "We were tense before the game but the final whistle relieved the pressure. The coach spoke to us and hasn’t changed much but just done little things that have led to this victory. The goal was the cherry ion the cake for me."

Clemens Fritz: "We went into the game with sheer passion and dealt with the fact that we conceded the equaliser. We defended well, stayed confident and put the Wolves under pressure. The preparation during the week was focused and we carried out our game plan over the 90 minutes. Everyone worked for his teammates and we cut out our mistakes."

Fin Bartels: "This win was earned by the whole team. We were snappy from the start and they had a Champions League hangover meaning we were fresher. There was lots of space on the pitch that we used well."

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "There was huge relief after the third goal I’m happy we got the three points and didn’t get another draw."

Viktor Skripnik: "It was important that the fans cheered us on right from the off. It certainly worked for us. I think we put in a good performance and beat a good side, but we still conceded two goals."

On the table position:

Clemens Fritz: "In a relegation battle it’s the wins that count. We finally got that today. We need to put in that kind of performance in the rest of our matches if we’re to stay up."

Fin Bartels: "That was a huge first step, but there are four more to follow. It’s annoying that the teams above us all won too but we’ll see. Every point counts and we go again on Friday night."

Viktor Skripnik: "This win is huge in terms on the table and the team spirit. We have shown that we can put in good performances and win. We are Werder. With this spirit we should be able to manage what lies ahead of us."

Thomas Eichin: "We can’t allow ourselves to think negatively, that only cripples the team. We have no fear of what lies ahead. We are all responsible for coming out of the situation we are in."

On the upcoming cup semi final:

Clemens Fritz: "We don’t have anything to lose at Bayern. Nobody will be banking on us but that’s our chance. We’ve been good in the cup so far so why not on Tuesday night?"

Fin Bartels: "We’re looking forward to the game and without any pressure on us. It’s a bonus, the Bundesliga is what’s important. Bayern are good, we’ve seen that in all competitions including Champions League. We’ll take some confidence from today into the game."

Thomas Eichin: "It is a mammoth task that we’re facing. We can put the Bundesliga to one side momentarily and concentrate purely on our own performance."
