"Not getting better as quickly as we’d hoped"

The situation could be better for Aron Jóhannsson. Werder’s striker has been out since September with a nerve problem in his right hip and the USA international has only been able to train on his own. But the 24-year-old remains optimistic: “Of course the situation is frustrating for me because the injury has not got better as quickly as we had all hoped. That is not easy, but I am trying my best and am remaining positive for the future,” said Jóhannsson in an interview with WERDER.DE.

He toils away every day in the weights room at the Weserstadion and is working “as hard as possible with fitness coaches to get fit again as quickly as possible.” Jóhannsson receives treatment between 9 and 10am before he goes into the weights room with coach Axel Dörrfuß to do planned exercises on his own. There is then another session with Dörrfuß after a break for lunch.

Encouragement from teammates

Jóhannsson managed two goals in the first six games of the season, but it’s still up in the air whether he will be able to add to this tally before the end of the campaign. “These is still no precise date for my return to the team. We are trying to think day by day, week by week, and are weighing up every day what programme will work best for me.” However, it seems that a return to Bundesliga action may only be possible in time for the start of next season.

The striker has received great encouragement from his fellow Green-Whites on his long road to recovery. He sees them every day in and around the changing room. “Of course the entire team is supporting me. I see the boys in the changing room and get asked 20 times a day when I’ll be fit again. But my best friends at the moment are probably the fitness coach and the physios,” said the forward with a large grin on his face. Despite the past weeks, Aron Jóhannsson has not lost his sense of humour.
