SV Werder Bremen’s record Bundesliga scoring chart is now topped by a pair of players. Claudio Pizarro successfully converted a penalty against Mainz on Saturday to draw level with Marco Bode. The duo have 101 top-flight strikes each. “I’m delighted. It’s an honour to be Werder’s leading scorer,” explained the 37-year-old after the match.
“It’s important to have players like him. It’s a great achievement and he deserves a lot of credit,” explained sporting director Thomas Eichin. “I’m really happy for Claudio. I’ll never understand how he feels as I only scored seven Bundesliga goals, but I’m sure Marco Bode know what it’s like,” added head coach Viktor Skripnik.
Pizarro hadn’t had time to contact his partner in crime before speaking to WERDER.de. “I’ve not been able to look at my phone yet, but I’ll certainly call him.” Other Bremen players were quick to applaud the veteran striker: “He’s an incredible players and I’d like to congratulate him. It’s just a shame he didn’t grab a winner for us.” Pizarro himself was disappointed with the result: “I thought we’d go on to win the game but unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
Viktor Skripnik feels it’s only a matter of time before he grabs his 102nd goal. “Claudio is determined to be the outright record holder. This motivates him, which is excellent.” It won’t happen in the immediate future though as the striker links up with the Peru squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela (Thursday, 24.03.2016) and Uruguay (Tuesday, 29.03.2016).
“It’s also important to play for my country, but obviously once I’m back I want to score some more goals for Werder, in order to put distance between myself and the chasing pack!” Maybe the history books will be rewritten before the season draws to a close…
