Not the afternoon that many imagined for Werder in the Allianz Arena. At the final whistle the score stood at 5-0. "It’s a disappointing result. We wanted to make it difficult for them, but when Bayern are on top of their game, it doesn’t matter how much effort you put in; their quality will show through," said Skripnik after the final whistle.

WERDER.DE spoke to staff and players after the match to gather their thoughts.

On the game:

Jannik Vestergaard: "Had we been marked on this performance we would’ve got a fail. We are not happy as we lost and failed to do what we had set out to accomplish. Bayern were better in every department. In the first 80 minutes we were second to them but in the last ten we were just non-existent. They took advantage of our mistakes and we didn’t get stuck into the challenges enough or contest in the air. It’s difficult against an opponent like this but the loss didn’t come as a massive surprise, however."

Viktor Skripnik: "We weren’t able to compete for the whole 90 minutes. Bayern are Bayern; they are not our direct competitors and the decisive games are the ones against those in the bottom nine of the table. The next game will be more important than this one."

Claudio Pizarro: "We knew that it would be a difficult game. Bayern are very strong but it’s not nuice to concede so many. It can happen against a team like this but we need to concentrate more int he next game."

Thomas Eichin: "It’s incredibly hard to compete here when Bayern play to their full potential and take their chances. They are so comfortable on the ball and their touch is so good that it’s hard to win challenges. We’re not as good as them, clearly, but we need to deal with situations like this far better. I need everyone to be annoyed about today."

Florian Grillitsch: "We didn’t necessarily hope to win here, but we wanted to do better than 5-0. We were stupid towards the end and didn’t concentrate."

Felix Wiedwald: "The early goal played into the hands of Bayern. It hurts but I’m annoyed about the last two goals; we gifted them away. It’s awful for our goal difference but we need to move on and focus on the games ahead of us."

Other topics:

On the goals conceded:

Viktor Skripnik: "Five was too many goals to concede. The goals towards the end of the game were unnecessary which annoys me somewhat."

Jannik Vestergaard: "There are certainly better games than this. It’s so nice to concede five in a stadium of 75,000 people and to barely see the ball. We shouldn’t have conceded so many and maybe we gave up too early."

On the next game:

Jannik Vestergaard: "Mainz is a very important game. We certainly want a home win so that we can show the fans that we can do better than this."

Florian Grillitsch: "We’re annoyed about the game today but now we need to focus on the next challenge. We will prepare well during the week and then give our all against Mainz."
