Hearing the news from Mali was tough to take for Sambou Yatabaré. Suddenly and unexpectedly, his father passed away last week, and Werder’s new signing was informed of the terrible loss on the morning of the away match against Leverkusen. The club allowed Yatabaré to return home on compassionate leave, and the Mali international was straight on a plane to his home country. The midfielder has been back in Bremen since the beginning of this week – and he spoke candidly about his hectic past few days.

His visit home is still taking its toll – that’s clear to see. "It’s not an easy situation for me and my siblings. It’s so hard to realise that our father is no longer with us," said Yatabaré frankly and honestly. "But I have a lot of brothers and sisters. Together with our mother we are a big team. We all help each other to deal with this loss, and we all support each other."

As a team, we try to be like a second family.

His relatively new teammates are also doing their best to look after the 27-year-old. "The team has been very important for me in the last few days. The boys have reacted brilliantly and they all asked straight away what they could do to help me as much as possible," explained the Mali international. For Jannik Vestergaard and co. it’s second nature to be by their teammate’s side in such a difficult situation. "Lots of us are separated from our families for long periods of time, or we don’t see them very often. Therefore as a team, we try to be like a second family to each other," said the Dane.

Yatabaré can look forward to the distraction of doing what he loves: playing football. On the training field, his thoughts are on other matters. "On the pitch I just concentrate on football and I don’t think about anything else. That’s very good for me. Therefore I really enjoy those moments," said the midfielder. Off the field, Yatabaré is still finding it understandably difficult to put his feelings to one side. To talk about it in front of the press is also not easy, but he did want to say one thing: "Huge thanks to everyone, the coaches too, for helping me in this difficult situation."
