There was a lack of satisfaction amongst the SVW squad following their 2-2 home draw with competitors Darmstadt – it was another missed opportunity. “We simply aren’t winning the games that you need to win in the relegation battle. The bottom line is that we didn’t do enough today,” said a dissatisfied Felix Wiedwald after the game. “We are very disappointed. It’s agonising that we only managed to pick up one point. The frustration amongst our fans is understandable,” explained manager Viktor Skripnik.

Zlatko Junuzovic, who was back in the starting line-up, also expressed his disappointment over the two unfortunate goals the Green-Whites conceded: “The two cheap goals we conceded is typical for the situation we are in. Fortunately Claudio managed to score the 2-2 equaliser and prevented a disaster but the draw is still nowhere not enough.” WERDER.DE heard what those involved had to say.

Thoughts on the game:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We are all very disappointed. We got off to a decent start and finally managed to take a lead again. But we simply concede goals too easily and punish ourselves through that. Overall it was a hectic game - lots of long balls forward, many challenges and fouls. A clear mental state is very important, but we had a mental block and that makes it difficult to play football.”

Thomas Eichin: “We are very upset about this draw. I can’t blame the team for their commitment, but the relegation battle is all about mental strength. Luck is not on our side and defensively we sometimes lack the necessary consistency in decisive situations.”

Fin Bartels: “It was the expected difficult game. We invested a lot but conceded another silly goal. Our comeback attempt in the closing stages fell just short.”

Felix Wiedwald: “We took the lead and should’ve held onto it. Obviously we are not satisfied. We had chances to retake the lead, but couldn’t take them.”

Viktor Skripnik: “This is the relegation battle. Both teams looked scared at the start of the game and made mistakes. After that both went at full throttle. We weren’t efficient enough and conceded many unnecessary set-pieces, which has been a problem for us the last couple of games. Adding onto that is the fact that we are scoring too few goals, although we controlled the opposition in the second half today. A simple chip into our area is enough to see us concede another goal.”

Thoughts on the penalty decision shortly before the break:

Felix Wiedwald: “The ball was played into the channel, I made contact with their player and we concede a very unfortunate penalty just before the break. It was a setback psychologically.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We should’ve cleared the situation beforehand. We had three or four fifty-fifty challenges in the build-up.”

Thomas Eichin: “The decision was fair. But the referee lacked a clear line overall today, particularly in assessing aerial duels. The players often didn’t know what would be deemed a foul and what wouldn’t, which played into Darmstadt’s hands since they take their attacking set-pieces very well.”

Thoughts on the relegation battle:

Thomas Eichin: “The other teams picked up points so the pressure will only increase. Relegation battles are never fun. But we have to make sure the team stays loose and doesn’t freeze due to the tension.”

Anthony Ujah: “Relegation battles are always tough. The character of the team and of each individual plays a big role in these situations. It’s important that we stick together as a team and not lose our spirit.”

Thoughts on the manager:

Felix Wiedwald: “He is the right man for the job. He pushed us forward from the sidelines, showing a lot of commitment and I think that the team played with courage and invested a lot.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “I’m not the right person to talk to about that. I’m a player and always try to give my best out on the pitch, as it’s my job. Our coaching staff is doing everything they can and you can’t accuse the team of lacking commitment. We run a lot and fight hard, but we desperately need to experience success again:”

Thomas Eichin: “We have to get out of this situation together as a club and not load off all our problems on the shoulders of our manager. That’s what Werder stands for. We have our own way of dealing with these things. We have a lot of pressure - the club as a whole and not just the manager - and we want to prevail together. The team and manager are working well together and I can’t see any type of rift.”

Viktor Skripnik: “Trust is always important for a manager. I feel the support of the entire club. Werder has stood for that for years. I’ve been at this club for 20 years. I have the club in my heart and will continue to give my best.”

Thoughts on the away game in Leverkusen:

Fin Bartels: “We have nothing to lose, since Leverkusen will enter this game as the clear favourites. We have to fight with everything we’ve got.”

Felix Wiedwald: “We already showed that we can win in Leverkusen even though it was in a different competition. We have to try and replicate that performance.”

Anthony Ujah: “We won’t travel to Leverkusen to somehow sneak away with a draw. We have to collect points in every game from now on.”

Viktor Skripnik: “The next game is just three days away. We are always capable of getting a result on the road this season, but Leverkusen won’t be the decisive game for us. It will remain a battle until the final matchday, with five or six teams fighting against relegation.”

Thomas Eichin: “Nothing is comparable to winning games and that’s what we need to do right now.”
