Sambou Yatabaré will have imagined his Werder debut to go much differently to the way it eventually did. The Mali international was substituted on at half time after waiting nearly three weeks to get on the pitch in a Green-White kit. He came on to bolster the midfield, energetically going into challenges and pushing forward with the ball.

The defensive midfielder came onto the right wing but didn't have any issues. "The coach asked me before the game so I said yes, of course. I've played all over midfield in my career so it wasn't new to me," said Yatabaré.

Work hard, prepare well and win

Unfortunately, the 26-year-old gave away a penalty in the closing stages that saw Ingolstadt double their lead. When asked if he was being over-zealous, he replied: "You can never be too motivated to play football."

Yatabaré is, however, optimistic about the future. "The team give me hope. We are a good side and therefore I have no doubt that we will stay up. We will be playing Bundesliga football next season," he said. "We will prepare, work hard and beat Darmstadt next week."
